Nonprofit-Organisationen (NPOs) treten in Deutschland in unterschiedlichen Rechtsformen auf. Die am häufigsten anzutreffende Rechtsform sind der eingetragene Verein und die Stiftung. In Deutschland existieren rund 550.000 Vereine und 15.000 Stiftungen. Abhängig von ihrer Rechtsform unterliegen Nonprofit-Organisationen unterschiedlichen gesetzlichen Vorschriften und Rechenschaftspflichten. Allen NPOs gemein ist, dass sich ihre Rechnungslegung von den denen der Kaufleute und sonstigen gewinnorientierten Unternehmen unterscheidet. Nach einer Erläuterung der (gesellschafts-)rechtlichen Grundlagen stellen Busse/Paarz in ihrem Buch die verpflichtend zu beachtenden Rechnungslegungsvorschriften dar. Die Besonderheiten, die sich bei der Anwendung des (nicht verpflichtend anzuwendenden) HGB bei NPOs ergeben, werden ebenso erläutert, wie einfachere Instrumente, mit denen der Rechenschaftspflicht Genüge getan werden kann. Abschließend erfolgt die Betrachtung der von den NPOs zu erstellenden Geschäftsberichte. Neben den Publizitätspflichten werden hier Beispielsgeschäftsberichte und Checklisten für die Aufstellung zur Verfügung gestellt.
