Seit dem Auffliegen der Zwickauer Terrorzelle hat sich dies geändert. Doch droht erneut eine Unterschätzung des Phänomens. Denn die Gefahr geht nicht nur von geplanten Terroranschlägen aus, wie sie das NSU-Trio verübte. Sie sind nur die höchste Eskalationsstufe der alltäglichen rechten Gewalt, die sich aus denselben ideologischen Wurzeln speist. Jeder Schlag gegen einen Linken, jeder Molotowcocktail gegen ein mit Migranten bewohntes Haus, jeder Tote auf der langen Liste der Opfer rechtsextremer Gewalt dient dem politischen Ziel der Rechtsextremen: der Einschüchterung und Beseitigung von Migranten und Andersartigen, die ihrem Ideal eines "völkischen Staates" im Wege stehen. Das organisierte rechtsextreme Netzwerk nimmt nicht ab, sondern eher zu, obwohl der Pogrom gegen die jüdische Minderheit über 70 Jahre zurückliegt. Was kann man daraus schließen? Sind die Schatten der Vergangenheit noch immer nicht gebannt? In der folgenden Ausarbeitung geht es darum, zu verdeutlichen, was der Begriff Rechtsextremismus bedeutet und worin die Ursachen in solchen extremen Einstellungen liegen. Man kann es nicht leugnen: Rassismus ist trotz des Untergangs des nationalsozialistischen Systems ein Teil der politischen und sozialen Realität in Deutschland und stellt bis heute noch immer eine wirkliche Gefahr dar. Voreingenommene Haltungen und diskriminierendes Verhalten führen zu grausamen Gewaltverbrechen. Eine der schlimmsten Mordserien mit rechtsextremen Hintergrund, welche die Bevölkerung erschütterte und die Polizei vor ein Rätsel stellte, war die des Nationalsozialistischen Untergrunds (NSU) von 2001- 2006. Neun Männer mit Migrationhintergrund und eine Polizistin fielen diesem zum Opfer. Bis zum Ende des Jahres 2011 konnten diese Taten nicht auf die rechtsextreme Organisation zurückgeführt werden. Die Neonazi- Gruppe konnte ungehindert zahlreiche Morde begehen. Wie ist das möglich? Wird der Rechtsextremismus in unserer Gesellschaft verdrängt oder gar verharmlost? Zu Beginn dieser Arbeit wird versucht, den Begriff Rechtsextremismus zu definieren, um anschließend Merkmale und Ursachen zu beleuchten. Es gilt, heraus zu finden, wie aus „Kindern“ der Mittelschicht kaltblütige Killer werden können, so wie es bei dem NSU-Trio der Fall war. Wie kann über ein halbes Jahrhundert nach dem Ende des zweiten Weltkriegs solch brutaler rechter Terror gedeihen? Gibt es Antworten auf diese Fragen? Ein weiterer Bestandteil der Ausarbeitung ist der Blick auf die thüringische Universitätsstadt Jena. Hierbei sollen, mit Hilfe eines Einblicks in die Vergangenheit, Antworten darauf gefunden werden, warum die Akzeptanz von Neo-Nazis in vielen ostdeutschen Gegenden so hoch ist. In einem letzten Schritt geht es überwiegend um den Nationalsozialistischen Untergrund und dessen Taten. Wie konnte das Trio so lange Zeit unerkannt im Untergrund leben? Wie sind Mundlos, Böhnhardt und Zschäpe, welche das Trio bildeten, aufgewachsen? Gab es schon in ihrer Kindheit Auffälligkeiten und Verbindungen zum rechten Netzwerk?

In German Cinema – Terror and Trauma Since 1945, Thomas Elsaesser reevaluates the meaning of the Holocaust for postwar German films and culture, while offering a reconsideration of trauma theory today. Elsaesser argues that Germany's attempts at "mastering the past" can be seen as both a failure and an achievement, making it appropriate to speak of an ongoing 'guilt management' that includes not only Germany, but Europe as a whole. In a series of case studies, which consider the work of Konrad Wolf, Alexander Kluge, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Herbert Achterbusch and Harun Farocki, as well as films made in the new century, Elsaesser tracks the different ways the Holocaust is present in German cinema from the 1950s onwards, even when it is absent, or referenced in oblique and hyperbolic ways. Its most emphatically "absent presence" might turn out to be the compulsive afterlife of the Red Army Faction, whose acts of terror in the 1970s were a response to—as well as a reminder of—Nazism’s hold on the national imaginary. Since the end of the Cold War and 9/11, the terms of the debate around terror and trauma have shifted also in Germany, where generational memory now distributes the roles of historical agency and accountability differently. Against the background of universalized victimhood, a cinema of commemoration has, if anything, confirmed the violence that the past continues to exert on the present, in the form of missed encounters, retroactive incidents, unintended slippages and uncanny parallels, which Elsaesser—reviving the full meaning of Freud’s Fehlleistung—calls the parapractic performativity of cultural memory.
