An expansive investigation of the ways in which a newly configured right interconnects with anti-democratic and illiberal forces at the level of the state, Europe’s Fault Lines provides much-needed answers, revealing some uncomfortable truths. The Jewish Holocaust orphan Jay's life story is linked to tales of deep hatreds, profound love, and paralyzing fears. The storyteller is Harold. He had been Jay's boyhood friend and only discovered late in life that Jay was one of a small number of Dutch Jews who had not been killed by Hitler and his murderous goons. The hatred in this story is projected through the character of a Dutch Nazi who first raped Jay's mom and later killed her. The love is presented through the story of the three-way friendship between Jay's adoptive mom, his natural mom, and Harold's uncle. The paralyzing fears in the story are portrayed through the character of Jay's adoptive dad who, even after the war, was still too afraid to tell Jay about his birth mom. The ongoing drama in this three-family story is repeatedly brought to the fore through the actions of Harold's dad who had the bravado of a storm chaser but the attention span of a two-year-old. Jay's story is a parable in the sense that Hitler's henchmen usually, but not always, used violence and fear as tools to suppress the spirit of love in the Netherlands during WWII and afterwards.

Until recently, it was assumed that the Nazis agitated against Chaplin from 1931 to 1933, and then again from 1938, when his plan to make The Great Dictator became public. This book demonstrates that Nazi agitation against Chaplin was in fact a constant from 1926 through the Third Reich. When The Gold Rush was released in the Weimar Republic in 1926, the Nazis began to fight Chaplin, whom they alleged to be Jewish, and attempted to expose him as an intellectual property thief whose fame had faded. In early 1935, the film The Gold Rush was explicitly banned from German theaters. In 1936, the NSDAP Main Archives opened its own file on Chaplin, and the same year, he became entangled in the machinery of Nazi press control. German diplomats were active on a variety of international levels to create a mood against The Great Dictator. The Nazis' dehumanizing attacks continued until 1944, when an opportunity to capitalize on the Joan Barry scandal arose. This book paints a complicated picture of how the Nazis battled Chaplin as one of their most reviled foreign artists.
