If you are living with, are close to, or are yourself someone who is hoarding, you'll know that the disorder goes far deeper than most people realise, affecting the whole family and presenting huge challenges to the physical, mental, emotional and even financial wellbeing of anyone involved. Jo Cooke is Director of one of the UK's leading support services for people affected by hoarding and clutter, and has written this sensitive and empathetic book to help anyone experiencing hoarding difficulties. She gives insight into Hoarding Disorder - explaining what it is and, importantly, what it isn't - and what may trigger hoarding. There are strategies for how to assess the scale of situation and lay the groundwork to address it, and insights into who can help and how they can do it. An 8 step-plan gives practical steps to tackle the hoarding, supported by suggestions for what to do with the 'stuff', and advice on safeguarding - as well as techniques to support the hoarder as they attempt to stay clutter-free. There is space in the book for individuals and their own stories of hoarding, giving an empowering voice to people affected by the condition, and replacing the morbid curiosity that often accompanies it. With plenty of information on resources and therapies that can help, this is a warm and hugely practical guide that can only help anyone affected in any way by hoarding.

Hoarding is a condition where a person has a tendency to collect and save things excessively and has difficulty in getting rid of items. This results in a cluttered living space and often causes distress and impairs the person from being able to fully function in their home. It's a common condition that affects 2-5% of the population and has far-reaching consequences for sufferers, family, friends and the wider community, together with potential health and safety implications, with increased risk of injury or vermin. There has been increasing interest in the media which has raised public awareness of this problem, but there has been very little literature aimed at helping hoarders until now. There is no one reason why individuals hoard. For some, the hoarding behaviours are a way of coping with an emotional trauma. For others, there may be a strong attachment to certain objects, or a belief that certain materials have value - such as books, magazines and newspapers. Hoarding behaviour can also be a learnt behaviour from growing up in a cluttered environment. Sometimes unusual items or objects are hoarded including faeces and urine. Hoarding is a common condition but little is known about it. Almost everyone has some hoarding traits but these may not manifest themselves to the extent that it causes disruption to a person's life and space. The true prevalence of hoarding is not clear however it appears to be a growing problem. With the increased attention that hoarding is getting more people are beginning to recognize that they may have a problem. This book fills an important gap for a dedicated book on hoarding disorder, and uses CBT tools to help people recover, and reclaim their space and their life.

My Husband S Under Here Somewhere written by Janice Strubbe Wittenberg, RN and has been published by Spiral Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-01 with Psychology categories.

Hoarders collect to excess, filling bathtubs, closets, kitchens, garages, storage sheds—floor-to-ceiling—to render their living spaces uninhabitable. They’re so consumed they lose jobs, family and friends, homes, health, and occasionally their lives. To the rest us, these people seem bizarre or mentally ill, and we view their challenges with impatience, frustration and simplistic answers. Yet a true fix isn’t so simple. My Husband’s Under Here Somewhere, however, strives to unearth them. Morbidly fascinating tales abound as the lives of hoarders who amass animals and collectors who spin out of control are examined. The science behind hoarding—including its link with Obsessive-Compulsive disorders—as well as promising forms of treatment, meet with consideration. Our materialistic culture, one that’s obsessed with with having more and more, further informs the narrative. Certain types of stockpiling stem from challenging life experiences. A fellow who’d been imprisoned in a Russian Gulag spent the remainder of his days amassing keys. Jodin, a resistance fighter during World War II, is a consummate saver of twine. For her, a possession of such insignificance once meant the difference between extinction and survival. As a boy, Norman’s father insisted the house be kept as neat as a pin. Should anything fall out of place—absolutely anything—and he got beaten. So nowadays, he thoroughly enjoys his messes and views them as a way to get even. Ordinary hoarders and extreme collectors notwithstanding, they’re also found among the rich and famous. Peter the Great kept a human zoo of freakish oddities, and also enjoyed excising his subjects’ teeth, adding them to his vast assemblage. The hapless Collyer brothers crammed their Manhattan brownstone to the brim and accidentally entombed themselves within it. Unable to part with his shorn locks and nail clippings, Howard Hughes stored them away for “safekeeping.” Then there’s China’s remarkable Emperor Qin. After he conquered all surrounding kingdoms, he constructed 270 palaces to live in. As if that weren’t enough, he built roads and dug irrigation canals alongside, standardized laws, established a system of weights and measures, created a form of currency, and then formalized the use of written characters. While not a hoarder by today's’ standards, he was, quite possibly, the first to promulgate the axiom, “He who dies with the most toys wins.” Eccentricity, wealth and death aside, each of the aforementioned had way too much stuff, which is a problem familiar to most of us. Dare to quest for answers as to why this is so, and our acquisitive culture must be examined. Harnessing humor and compassion, My Husband’s Under Here Somewhere does precisely that. As the first of its kind, this book of narrative non-fiction looks at hoarding and collecting as part of a continuum. And, while many self-help decluttering books and hoarding-related memoirs, as well as works dealing with Obsessive-Compulsive Hoarding already exist, none of them focus on the psycho-spiritual ramifications of suffocating to death beneath heaps of possessions. Hopefully, this publication will appeal to hoarders and collectors, as well as family, friends and neighbors impacted by the hoarder’s behaviors. It’s also for clinicians and public agencies in search of positive ways to respond. Lastly, it's for curious folks who seek to understand.

"Control Your Clutter!" is a book that is going to show you how to gain control of the clutter in your house so you can reclaim a calm, stress-free life. The method in this book works even if you are a hoarder! For the person with just a little clutter to an all out pack rat who hasn't thrown anything away for thirty years, this book has the solution to your problem. Do you hide and stay away from the windows when someone is knocking at your door? Do you have to clear away a place to sit when your family comes to visit? Even if the last time you saw your floor was ten years ago, this book will work for you! Even the person who faces eviction due to their hoarding ways will be able to follow these steps and dig themselves out of their situation. In this book, I am going to give instructions about how to deal with your clutter. Surprisingly, I am not going to tell you to get rid of everything. I come from a very poor background, and I must tell you that I understand hanging on to something in case you need it again. After all, it doesn't make sense to throw something out and then turn around and buy it again the next time you need it. I am going to ask you to make some hard decisions about whether or not you really need each item you come across. As usual, you will either donate the stuff you don't need, sell it, or throw it in the trash if it has no value. But I am going to give you the option to organize the things you can't part with so that they are no longer clutter even if you keep them. This book breaks all of the barriers a person has to getting their life back in order. Because I allow you to choose to keep your possessions, it helps take away the fear of losing everything. It will help you be able to let go of more things during the process and then rationalize getting rid of more things you saved after a generous period of time. It is similar to pulling the band-aid off slowly. Whatever your relationship is with your possessions, this book will be able to help you reclaim your home and your life! If you don't read this book now, where will you be next week, next month or next year? I promise this method is the least painful way I know to gain control of your clutter.
