Italians military contribution began immediately after the first French occupation of Lombardy (1796) and the creation of the Cisalpine Republic whit the constitution of the Lombard Legion. This Legion went on growing bigger until reaching in 1797 a total force of 15.000 men. With the constitution of 1802 the Cisalpine Republic got the name of Italian Republic. The divisions of the Italic army were brought to three. On 26 May 1805, the Italian Republic changed into Kingdom of Italy. The army of the new kingdom, inserted into the Grande Armee, took part to all Napoleon's campaigns showing the concreteness of its reality. The Italic Kingdom ceased to exist on 18 April 1814. Immediately followed the dissolution of the Italic army that was still compact even if reduced in force and efficiency by lasted fightings. That army had been living for 17 years, during that time had enlisted over 200,000 men and lost about 125,000. 3rd edition."

Little has been written about the defense of the Kingdom of Northern Italy, and this is the first study in English to detail the two-year conflict (1813-1814) within the larger context of the Napoleonic Wars. The French commander responsible for the defense was Eugene Beauharnais, stepson of Napoleon and son-in-law of the King of Bavaria. Outnumbered three to one, Beauharnais fought an outstanding defensive campaign, covering all of Napoleon's southern front while Napoleon faced off against the main allied armies as they invaded France. This was only Beauharnais's third command, and as a result of his less than stellar performance in his two earlier posts, he had acquired a poor reputation as a leader. Nafziger and Gioannini explain, however, that in this instance Beauharnais proved himself once and for all as the commander of an independent army, defending one of the most important parts of the French Napoleonic Empire. He made full use of geography, keeping his army in being, rather than risking it to seek a decision in the field. Because his stepson held the plains of Italy, Napoleon was able to concentrate his energies upon the evacuation of Germany and to demonstrate his military prowess in France.

Alla fine l'attualità emergerà di nuovo, ma in un contesto diverso, inaspettato». Seguendo tali consigli storiografici, il presente lavoro affronta le tappe fondamentali e le peculiarità che portarono alla fine del Regno delle Due Sicilie e alla necessaria formazione dell'Italia unita, ma in modo particolare analizza il ruolo del Mezzogiorno nella costruzione dell'Italia contemporanea.Il libro, con i suoi limiti, vuole essere anche una critica all'uso pubblico del passato e, soprattutto, all'interpretazione della storia del Mezzogiorno con una forte ideologia legittimista, che ha fatto ritornare negli ultimi decenni una vecchia interpretazione storiografica, per la quale il crollo del Regno borbonico non avvenne per dinamiche interne, ma per la semplice conquista piemontese. Questa tendenza storiografica ha parlato di saccheggio delle ricchezze meridionali, di smantellamento delle industrie del sud al momento dell'Unità, di unificazione forzata e di disillusione delle speranze dei contadini, i "briganti partigiani", che si ribellarono alle violenze subite dagli invasori, difendendo anche la presunta identità meridionale, contrapposta a quella settentrionale. Questa tendenza storiografica, sempre restando nella scia dell'«uso pubblico della storia», ha addirittura sostenuto che i problemi economici del Mezzogiorno sarebbero nati al momento dell'Unità con la colonizzazione dei Piemontesi. Il libro, per questo, è dedicato e indirizzato ai giovani, perché si sta consolidando sempre di più un processo di distruzione del passato. Infatti, come scrisse nel 1989 Eric Hobsbawm, «la maggior parte dei giovani, alla fine del secolo, è cresciuta in una sorta di presente permanente, nel quale manca ogni rapporto organico con il passato storico del tempo in cui essi vivono».
