Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War and Going West to Grow Up With the Country I once heard that prince of orators, Colonel In gersoll, say in a public address, We of the North owned slaves but we found it didn't pay, hence we concluded it wasn't right. Anybody can see that a thing isn't right when it doesn't pay. And Henry W. Grady, in his address on the New South before the New England society of New York, put it this way: Had Mr. Tombs said, which he did not say, that he would call the roll of his slaves at the foot of Bunker Hill, he would have been foolish, for he might have known that whenever slavery became entangled in war it must perish; that the chattel in human esh ended forever in New England when your fathers, not to be blamed for parting with what did not pay, sold their slaves to our fathers, not to be praised for know ing a paying thing when they saw it. And in this connection I recall that in the case of Dred Scott against Sanford, the decision Of which held that Scott was the slave of Sanford, notwithstanding he had been voluntarily taken into territory where slavery was prohibited by the terms of the Missouri compro mise act, and which did SO much to bring on the war, the defendant Sanford was a New Yorker. Excerpt from Personal Recollections of the Civil War This volume does, not claim to be a tactical, or strategic history of the campaigns of which it treats; it aims rather to be a narrative of the every-day life and experience of the private soldier in camp and field - how he lived, how he marched, how he fought and how he suffered. No sooner had some of the volunteers reached the front, and been subjected to the hardships and exposures of army life, than they fell sick, were sent to the hospital and were discharged without passing through any serious campaigns. Others were wounded early, were disabled and were never able to return to their regiments. The more fortunate passed sound and unscathed through battle after battle and campaign after campaign through the whole war. Three years of active campaigning and a year in the hospital was the allotment of the writer, who thus was in the service from the beginning to the end of the war. Whatever the merits or demerits of this work may be, the impressions and the composition are my own. They are an elaboration of notes made during the war and directly after it, following which, it has taken the form of a diary. A Rebel S Recollections written by George Cary Eggleston and has been published by Digital Antiquaria this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with History categories.

Originally published in 1875, George Cary Eggleston's memoir, which proved immensely popular among readers throughout the country, is a nostalgic, often amusing collection of essays based on the author's Civil War experiences. Eggleston describes life in Virginia before the war, offers glowing assessments of the men who made up the Confederate army and the women who stood behind them, satirizes the Confederacy's finances and its army's red tape, and recollects the war's end. He provides compelling portraits of his heroes from the war, lavishing praise on Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and especially Jeb Stuart. By 1905, "A Rebel's Recollections" had gone through four editions, suggesting how well it reflected the mood of the nation, which by then wanted to forget angry sectionalism and glorify the soldiers of both sides in an idealized view of the war.
