The Meaning Text Theory (MTT) is a lexicon-centred and dependency-based theory for the description of language using a holistic model that incorporates semantics, syntax, morphology and lexis. This volume, prepared on the occasion of Igor Mel'čuk’s 70th birthday, offers a cross-section of the current advances in MTT and its applications. The first part of the book focuses on lexical phenomena that are still largely neglected in mainstream linguistics: sound symbolism as manifested by ideophones, and idiosyncratic lexical relations as manifested by lexical functions (LFs). In particular, LFs are addressed from different angles (including the introduction of new “standard” LFs, the argument structure and semantic decomposition of lexical relations captured by LFs, automatic recognition of LF-instances in corpora, and the use of LFs in terminology and natural language processing). The second part of the book deals with such prominent model-oriented issues as semantic paraphrasing in MTT, the role of phrase structure in MTT and syntactic analysis within MTT.

Le Rév. Dr. François Kara Akoa-Mongo est né et a grandi au Cameroun. Il est le 7ième enfants des feux Pasteur François Akoa Abômô, et de Djômô Essômba Suzanne. Après son ordination en 1967, il a servi l'Eglise Presbytérienne Camerounaise en plusieurs qualités avant et après ses etudes aux Etats Unis jusqu'en 1987, date a laquelle il est définitivement rentré aux Etats-Unis avec toute sa famille. Pendant 21 ans, il a enseigné le français, d'Espagnol, le Latin et les Sciences Sociales comme professeur certifié aux lycées de Washington Academy et de Narraguagus. Il enseignait aussi à l'Université du Maine à Machias à titre de vacataire. Lui et sa femme Kathérine ont élevé leurs 9 enfants qui vivent dans les villes de la région de New England. Depuis 20 ans, il est Pasteur d'une paroisse de l'Eglise Congregationnelle à Machiasport, Maine. Akoa-Mongo a une Maîtrise en Théologie, une autre dans l'Enseignement des Langues, et un Ph. Adapting Nineteenth-Century France uses the output of six canonical novelists and their recreations in a variety of media to push for a re-conceptualisation of our approach to the study of adaptation. The works of Balzac, Hugo, Flaubert, Zola, Maupassant and Verne reveal themselves not as originals to be defended from adapting hands, but fashioned from the adapted voices of a host of earlier artists, moments and media. The text analyses re-workings of key nineteenth-century texts across time and media in order to underline the way in which such re-workings cast new light on many of their source texts and reveal the probing analysis nineteenth-century novelists undertake in relation to notions of originality and authorial borrowing.
