This collection of papers addresses the wide variety of questions that arise when Spanish (or any language) comes into contact with other languages. Which languages are used and under what circumstances? How do languages change and affect each other in a bilingual or multilingual environment? How do societal pressures, cultural stereotypes, and individual attitudes affect language use and development, or even result in the death of a language? Spanish in Contact is organized into three sections, examining contact situations in Spain, Latin America, and the United States. The authors look at regions where Spanish is the dominant language as well as regions where it is the minority language, and discuss changes in the lexicon, phonology and syntax of the affected languages. Code-switching and issues in language planning are also addressed.

Despite over 50 years of literacy training by the Mexican government, the National Census records an illiteracy rate of over 70 percent in most Indian communities. This book attempts to discover why so many Indians are illiterate today despite an indigenous literary tradition that dates back to the pre-Conquest period. The author sees language as the main factor explaining the high illiteracy rate in the Indian regions. Although alphabets have been created for most of Mexico's indigenous languages, there is no longer a literate tradition in the languages themselves, and writing is intrinsically associated with the official and dominant language, Spanish. Indians continue to reproduce their group identity through the maintenance of linguistic and cultural boundaries. How these boundaries have been built over time and how they continue to be maintained throughout the 20th century form the substance of this book.

Madrid 1900 assesses the cultural history of Madrid and its relation to the cultural history of Spain through examining the literature written in and on Madrid at the turn of the nineteenth century. The center for Spanish national identity, turn-of-the-century Madrid offered a haven for young writers to try out their ideas and launch their careers. Ugarte traces the history of this writerly consciousness in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, combining historical, biographical, and literary sources.

Trade And Culture written by Patricia M. Goff and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-28 with Political Science categories.

Governments that seek to liberalize trade can find that doing so is often in tension with their desire to achieve the objectives of cultural policy. This is because measures like local content requirements can seem like discriminatory practices when viewed through the lens of trade liberalization. This tension has prompted a long-standing debate, with great variation in how countries have approached it. Trade and Culture: The Ongoing Debate explores this variation across geographic space. It also seeks to explain the evolution in these various policies over time. Policies are not static, largely due to domestic politics, shifts in the international trading system and technological developments. The chapters in this volume explore the different approaches to the trade and culture debate and provide an up-to-date look at current versions of these policies in Canada, the European Union, South Africa, Latin America, South Korea, the United States and China. This book will be of great value to scholars and researchers interested in cultural policies and the politics of international trade. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Cultural Policy.

Digital Broadcasting written by Jo Pierson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-23 with Social Science categories.

Digital Broadcasting presents an introduction to how the classic notion of 'broadcasting' has evolved and is being reinterpreted in an age of digitization and convergence. The book argues that 'digital broadcasting' is not a contradiction in terms, but-on the contrary-both terms presuppose and need each other. Drawing upon an interdisciplinary and international field of research and theory, it looks at current developments in television and radio broadcasting on the level of regulation and policy, industries and economics, production and content, and audience and consumption practices.
