The motel manager momentarily surveyed the young man up and down. "Passing through or here on business perhaps?" The man remained motionless, but for his hand scribbling over the credit card slip. Raising his head for an eye to eye, "I suppose you could say that. Spent some time looking at property for sale around Smithson County, I believe it's called? Sound right?" "That's it," complied the manager, studying the credit receipt through the smoke screen made by the cigarette between his lips. "Mr. Woodson. You wouldn't be interested in becoming a motel owner?" He gave the young man a sly grin. "No, no. Grew up in a place similar to the smaller towns around here. Just thought I'd check out the market. Know one thing, some pretty sassy babes selling Real Estate around here." He gave the manager a wink, turned and butting his suitcase against the screen edged outside. Walking toward his car, he spoke to himself. "Sassy and sweet tasting too " He laughed aloud. Inside the car he removed the business card from the visor. He pressed it on his nostrils inhaling deeply. Then licked it with his tongue. "Marie, honey, there's nothing like the taste of perfume in the morning. 'Midnight Passion, ' I believe she called it."

Death Wears A White Gardenia written by Zelda Popkin and has been published by Bitingduck Press LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-12 with Fiction categories.

Zelda Popkin solves her intriguing mystery with a female detective named Mary Carner. Death Wears a White Gardenia is the first of a series of mystery novels featuring young, and pretty Mary Carner, a trained investigator on the security staff of a major department store in New York City in the late thirties and early forties. Mary Carner is analytical, intuitive, direct, tactful, independent, and receptive. Her character, emerging when it did, challenged the male gender-role stereotyping that for many years was all there was in detective fiction. By now, however, the female detective has found her place and is much admired in literature, film, and television. Zelda Popkin's Mary Carner was before her time. She emerges here again, a fully-conceived woman, a fully-conceived professional so we can see that today's female detectives, like Jessica Fletcher and V. I. Warshawski, follow in the footsteps that Zelda Popkin's Mary Carner marked so well. Boson Books also offers Time Off for Murder by Zelda Popkin. Seeing Red: A Women’s Quest for Truth, Power, and the Sacred is an intimate memoir about one woman’s search for personal power—a journey of climbing inner and outer mountains that takes her to the holy Mt. Kailas in Tibet, through a seven-year marriage, and into the arms of the fierce goddess Kali, where she discovers her powerful, feminine self. This is the story of Denmark native Lone Mørch’s transformation—a story of love and passion, and also a story of self-betrayal. After realizing that she’s given up on herself, Mørch has to strip herself bare, lose everything she's held dear, and tear down everything she's ever built in order to reclaim her life and sense of self. As much a memoir about coming into one’s own as it is a love affair with the Himalayas, Seeing Red takes the reader on an unforgettable journey of creation and destruction.

Economic Investigations In Twentieth Century Detective Fiction written by Yan Zi-Ling and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-09 with Literary Criticism categories.

In his study of Golden Age and hard-boiled detective fiction from 1890 to 1950, Yan Zi-Ling argues that these two subgenres can be distinguished not only by theme and style, but by the way they structure knowledge, value, and productive labour. Using the detective as a reference point and enactor of socially based interests, Yan shows that Golden Age texts are distinguished by their conservationism (and not only by their conservatism), with the detectives’ actions serving to stabilize institutions with specific ideological aims. In contrast, the criminal investigations of the hard-boiled detective, who is poorly aligned with institutions and strong interest groups, reveal the fragility of the status quo in the face of escalating cycles of violence. Key to Yan’s discussion are theories of exchange, value, and the gift, the latter of which he suggests is more akin to detective work than is wage labour. Analyzing texts by a wide range of authors that includes Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Dorothy Sayers, Raoul Whitfield, George Harmon Coxe, and Mickey Spillane, Yan demonstrates that the detective’s truth-generating function, most often characterized as a process of discovery rather than creation, is in fact crucial to the institutional and class-based interests that he or she serves.
