In dieser Aufsatzsammlung wird Johann Georg Hamanns Grundthese von »Gott als Schriftsteller« interpretiert und in weitreichende literarische Zusammenhänge gestellt. Das Verhältnis von Reden, Hören und Sehen wird theologisch und eschatologisch untersucht. Hamanns Gedanken zum Abendmahl und zum »Sacrament der Sprache« werden mit der Rolle des Essens und Trinkens in Beziehung gebracht. Die Narziss-Episode der »Metamorphosen« des Ovid deutete Hamann christologisch und als Kenner des Hebräerbriefs verfasste er eine kritische Rezension des Kommentars von J. D. Michaelis (Göttingen). Joachim Ringleben arbeitet die Bedeutung Hamanns als des maßgeblichen theologischen Sprachdenkers nach Luther heraus, dessen Worttheologie u. a. Kierkegaard geprägt hat. In this essay collection Johann Georg Hamann's thesis of »God as author« is interpreted and put into a wider literary context. The relationship between speaking, hearing and seeing is examined in a theological and eschatological manner. Hamann's idea on the last supper and on the »Sacrament of speech« are put into a relationship with the importance of eating and drinking. The Narcissus episode of Ovid's » Metamorphoses« were interpreted by Hamann in a christological manner. As a connoisseur of the Hebrews, he wrote a critical review on the comment of Johann David Michaelis (Göttingen School of History). Joachim Ringleben analyses the meaning of Hamann as an of the most important theological thinkers after Luther, whose speech theology influenced Kierkegaard among others.

Interest in Johannes Bobrowski (1917-1965) has suffered from an impression of the complexity of his works and of the narrowness of his focus: on 'The Germans and their Eastern European neighbours'. The current study re-examines aspects of Bobrowski's 'Sarmatian' works, especially their chronological development, but places them within the wider context of the whole of his oeuvre. It looks at the long period of development before he discovered his 'theme' in the early 1950s and examines his development after Sarmatische Zeit and Schattenland Ströme, seeing the volume Wetterzeichen as moving increasingly away from the past and towards more contemporary issues. His short stories and novels are related to the issues confronting him in East Germany and develop increasingly into responses to immediate poetic and social problems. Far from being a remote and backward orientated 'Sarmatian', Bobrowski emerges as a writer attempting to communicate with a society which, he felt, threatened to ignore basic human needs and aspirations. The study makes use of material from Bobrowski's Nachlaß to present a figure looking for and offering patterns for orientation in his East German society, but with renewed relevance for post-unification Germany.

Explores the performance of aging in the "late style" of Günter Grass, Ruth Klüger, Christa Wolf, and Martin Walser. Demographers say that by the year 2060, every seventh person in Germany will be aged eighty or older, and every third person over sixty-five. The prediction for other Western countries is scarcely different. Indeed, the aging society is seen by some as a graver threat than even global warming, with potentially unmanageable tensions relating to intergenerational relationships, work and benefits, and flows of people. This book explores the representation and performance of aging in recent "late-style" German-language fiction. It situates the authors chosen as case studies -- Günter Grass, Ruth Klüger, Christa Wolf, and Martin Walser -- in their biographical and social contexts and explores the significance of their aesthetic figuring of aging for debates raging both in Germany and internationally. In particular, the book looks at gender, generations, and trauma and their impact on how writers "narrativize" aging. Finally, it examines the "timeliness" of these different representations and late-style performances of aging in the context of the shift of social, political, and economic power away from the declining societies of theWest to the ascendant societies of the East.
