Professor Kaminsky’s lucid exposition is, surprisingly, the first attempt in English to deal extensively and critically with Hegel’s views on art, as outlined in his difficult volumes on that subject. Hegel on Art thus performs a needed service for those interested in either the philosophy or the history of the fine arts. Hegel’s idealistic metaphysics was the last European endeavor to construct a universal philosophical system on the traditional pattern, and to modern readers it can easily appear more imposing than useful. But in his examination of art, according to Professor Kaminsky, the German philosopher became “the most empirical of the empiricists,” and his observations can be valuable to us quite independent of our commitment to his metaphysics. Moreover, as Professor Kaminsky shows, Hegel’s metaphysical framework does give him an advantage not available under the rigorous skepticism of today’s positivist or symbolist: he can recognize that art mirrors the world of action, and so can provide it with objective validity. As the author concludes in Hegel’s defense: “It may well be that only art can be used to communicate the important episodes that happen to us or others....Without art, we lose one of our great sources of information as to who we are and what we ought to do.”

This book focuses on a dimension of art which the philosophical tradition (from Plato to Hegel and even Adorno) has consistently overlooked, such was its commitment - explicit or implicit - to mimesis and the metaphysics of truth it presupposes. De Beistegui refers to this dimension, which unfolds outside the space that stretches between the sensible and the supersensible - the space of metaphysics itself - as the hypersensible and show how the operation of art to which it corresponds is best described as metaphorical. The movement of the book, then, is from the classical or metaphysical aesthetics of mimesis (Part One) to the aesthetics of the hypersensible and metaphor (Part Two). Against much of the history of aesthetics and the metaphysical discourse on art, he argues that the philosophical value of art doesn't consist in its ability to bridge the space between the sensible and the supersensible, or the image and the Idea, and reveal the sensible as proto-conceptual, but to open up a different sense of the sensible. His aim, then, is to shift the place and role that philosophy attributes to art.

This book gathers a set of reflections on the gift of beauty and the passion of being. There is something surprising about beauty that we receive and that moves the passion of being in us. The book takes issue with an ambiguous attitude to beauty among some who proclaim their advanced aesthetic authenticity. Beauty seems bland and lacks the more visceral thrill of the ugly, indeed the excremental. We crave what disrupts and provokes us, not what gives delight or even consoles. By contrast, attention is given to how beauty arouses enigmatic joy in us, and we enjoy an elemental rapport with it as other. Surprised by beauty, our breath is taken away, but we are more truly there with the beautiful when we are taken outside of ourselves. We are first receivers of the gift of surprise and only then perceivers and conceivers. My attention to the passion of being stresses a patience, a receptivity to what is other. What happens is not first our construction. There is something given, something awakening, something delighting, something energizing, something of invitation to transcendence. The theme is amplified in diverse reflections: on life and its transient beauty; on soul music and its relation to self; on the shine on things given in creation; on beauty and Schopenhauer's dark origin; on creativity and the dynamis in Paul Weiss's creative ventures; on redemption in Romanticism in the thought of Stanley Cavell; on theater as a between or metaxu; on redeeming laughter and its connection with the passion of being.

This essay reconstructs Schelling's philosophical development during the years 1794-1800. It emphasizes the role of Kant's heritage within Schelling's early philosophy, and the strong relationship between Schelling and Hölderlin during their Tübingen years. The central question it explores is how the Absolute relates to Finiteness - a relation that constitutes the basis of transcendental idealism as well as the essence of a transcendental philosophy, here radically understood as a philosophy of finitude and as a critical aesthetics. The essay shows the young Schelling as he presents a rich and novel field of inquiry, which provides a credible and engaging alternative to Hegelian thinking and anticipates themes from twentieth-century philosophy (Phenomenology, Existentialism, Critical Thinking). The volume thus provides both a historical and a contemporary look at Schelling's early philosophy, and at its original and speculative approach.

The motivation for this book is to examine the concept of value within the context of the metaphilosophy developed in Metaphysics and Epistemology in Eastern and Western Philosophy. We approach historical aesthetics and ethics in the same way we treated metaphysics and epistemology. We are not concerned with outlining the differences between philosophers on these subjects, but rather finding a relational metaphilosophy capable of explaining their apparently divergent views (or in other words not how are they all wrong, but how they are all right). In this manner we hope to uncover the ontological structure of aesthetics and ethics in the context of the Relational Totality.In this previous work we posited Being and consciousness are essentially relational, with the relationality of consciousness manifesting itself as the power (what Lao Tzu refers to as the Te) to recognize and create relations in the world (what Heidegger calls the ready at hand). Philosophy was thus reinterpreted as the study of relationality. In contrast, conventional philosophy generally posits consciousness as the awareness of individual substances, and its "world" the sum total of these entities. In an abstract sense consciousness can also conceive of the Relational Totality, which is the totality of all potential and actual relations. Modes of the Relational Totality in Eastern philosophy include the Tao, Brahman, and Uji and in Western philosophy include the Apeiron, the Form of the Good, and Being. Eastern and Western metaphysics diverge in what is considered the ontical elements of this Relational Totality. Eastern philosophy models these elements as temporal relations, while in Western philosophy these are framed as the eternal relations between relations.In contrast with the truth values studied in epistemology, axiology is the branch of philosophy that studies quality values (or what we consider worthy). Axiology is conventionally divided into aesthetics and ethics. We analyze Eastern and Western philosophy to find commonalities in theories of value with regard to consciousness, which include:* The theory of an ill-defined higher form of ethics (Yājnavalkya, Chuang Tzu, Sri Aurobindo, Nietzsche)* The social / transactional nature of conventional ethics (Yājnavalkya, K'ung Fu Tzu, Socrates, Aristotle, Kant)* The dynamic and ineffable nature of the free aesthetic experience (Chuang Tzu, Kant, Sartre, Pirsig)* The basing of conventional ethics on the aesthetic experience (Nishitani, Nietzsche, Santayana).* The association of the free aesthetic experience with an altered sense of space and time (Dōgen, Black Elk, Nishitani, Nietzsche, Santayana, Sartre)* The translation of this freedom to action (Black Elk, Nishitani, Nietzsche, Sartre)We argue aesthetics is the higher form of ethics discussed by these philosophers. We posit conventional ethics is an objectified form of aesthetics simplified into theology, politics, and economics. We propose a temporal model for the aesthetic experience and draw parallels between our altered sense of space and time within the aesthetic experience and the concepts of space and time in physics. We then argue the modality inherent in this ontological structure of the aesthetic experience consists in the relation between ontical elements of the Relational Totality and the Relational Totality itself.This book is dedicated to my Mom and Dad, who taught me the value of free play; and to Sheila, Abigail, and Madelyn, who make life a great adventure!

This first book-length work of the prominent German philosopher Gunter Figal to appear in English offers a radical defense of metaphysical philosophy in the era of postmodern thought. For Figal, metaphysics does not represent an anachronistic and pernicious mode of thought that ought to be overcome but rather is a type of thinking that proceeds from a recognition of the necessary coherence of everything with its opposite. It is this agonistic relationship of opposites that Figal, following Heraclitus, terms strife. Rather than regarding the conflict of opposites as necessarily resulting in the dissolution of meaning and sense, as many contemporary thinkers maintain, Figal contends that sense and meaning can only come into existence metaphysically, that is to say, as a consequence of strife. And, the context within which strife occurs is freedom. Using these concepts of strife and freedom, Figal proposes new and provocative readings of Plato, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Kierkegaard, as well as of some of the most controversial figures of twentieth-century philosophy.
