The study of literature and culture is marked by various distinct understandings of passages – both as phenomena and critical concepts. These include the anthropological notion of rites of passage, the shopping arcades (Passagen) theorized by Walter Benjamin, the Middle Passage of the Atlantic slave trade, present-day forms of migration and resettlement, and understandings of translation and adaptation. Whether structural, semiotic, spatial/geographic, temporal, existential, societal or institutional, passages refer to processes of (status) change. They enable entrances and exits, arrivals and departures, while they also foster moments of liminality and suspension. They connect and thereby engender difference. Passages is an exploration of passages as contexts and processes within which liminal experiences and encounters are situated. It aims to foster a concept-based, interdisciplinary dialogue on how to approach and theorize such a term. Based on the premise that concepts travel through times, contexts and discursive settings, a conceptual approach to passages provides the authors of this volume with the analytical tools to (re-)focus their research questions and create a meaningful exchange across disciplinary, national and linguistic boundaries. Contributions from senior scholars and early-career researchers whose work focuses on areas such as cultural memory, performativity, space, media, (cultural) translation, ecocriticism, gender and race utilize specific understandings of passages and liminality, reflecting on their value and limits for their research.

Das Verhältnis von Philosophie und Rhetorik wird in der Forschungsliteratur meist als eines der Entgegensetzung und des wechselseitigen Ausschlusses beschrieben. Dabei wird dem überzeitlichen Wahrheitsanspruch der Philosophie die kontextabhängige Wirkungsabsicht der Rhetorik gegenübergestellt. Während Philosophie auf sicheres Wissen und Erkenntnis ziele, gehe es der Rhetorik nicht um Wahrheit, sondern um die bloße Wahrscheinlichkeit und Meinung. Das kann allerdings nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass Philosophie und Rhetorik auf grundsätzliche Weise aufeinander verwiesen bleiben. Denn allein in der Notwendigkeit, ihren Wahrheitsanspruch öffentlich durchsetzen zu müssen und in der Frage nach der adäquaten Wahl der Ausdrucksmittel, muss sich Philosophie notwendig rhetorischer Verfahren bedienen. Entsprechend hinterfragt eine rhetorische informierte Philosophie das intellektualistische Ideal einer transparenten und selbstexplikativen philosophischen Sprache. Sie unterstreicht demgegenüber die Materialität, Literarizität, Performativität und Historizität philosophischen Sprechens. In diesem Sinne zielt das Handbuch Rhetorik und Philosophie auf ein Denken, das sich des paradoxen Verhältnisses von Philosophie und Rhetorik bewusst bleibt.

Ein zentraler Punkt ist dabei die Aufarbeitung der lang verleugneten Verstrickungen der europäischen Philosophie in die europäische Expansion und den Kolonialismus. In diesem Horizont beschäftigt sich das Buch mit Fragen der Entstehung des wissenschaftlich begründeten „Rassedenkens“ in der Philosophie sowie der eurozentrischen Geschichtskonstruktionen des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Zudem werden Forschungsansätze zur Überwindung einer eurozentrischen Philosophie vorgestellt und die Frage aufgeworfen, wie im Prozess einer Dekolonisierung des Denkens ethisch-epistemische Verantwortung übernommen werden kann. *** Calls to decolonise thinking and scholarship have become ever more insistent in recent years and have now reached European universities. The present volume seeks to explain why philosophy also needs to undergo a process of decolonisation, and what such a process might mean for research and teaching in the subject. A central point is to re-examine the long-denied involvement of European philosophy in European expansion and colonialism. Against this background, the book examines issues around the development of academically-based “racial theory” in philosophy and the Eurocentric constructions of history in the 18th and 19th centuries. It suggests approaches to overcoming Eurocentric philosophy and asks how ethical and epistemic responsibility can be taken in the process of decolonising thought.
