It examines present pressures on coral reefs, including overfishing and destructive fishing, coastal development, and pollution from land and sea, as well as projected threats from climate-related ocean warming and acidification. A global assessment of coral reefs at risk from overfishing, coastal development and other human activity. The study finds that nearly 60 per cent of the earth's reefs are threatened by human activity - ranging from coastal development and overfishing to inland and marine pollution - leaving much of the world's marine biodiversity at risk. In addition, the report concludes that while reefs provide billions of people and hundreds of countries with food, tourism revenue, coastal protection and new medications for increasingly drug-resistant diseases, they are among the least monitored and protected natural habitats in the world.

Managing Coral Reefs written by Kelly Heber Dunning and has been published by Anthem Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-30 with Social Science categories.

Managing Coral Reefs examines Indonesia’s and Malaysia’s pathways to implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), focusing specifically on how regional and national policies in Southeast Asia have fared when implementing the Aichi Targets of the CBD. Kelly Heber Dunning examines CBD implementation through marine protected areas (MPAs) for coral reefs in Indonesia and Malaysia. While Indonesia uses a co-managed framework, whereby villages and governments share power, to implement its MPAs, Malaysia uses a top-down network of federally managed marine parks. Using mixed methods through interviews and surveys as well as coral reef ecology surveys conducted over a year of fieldwork, Dunning argues that co-managed systems are the current best practice for implementing the CBD’s Aichi Targets in tropical developing countries.

"Coastal communities in the Coral Triangle are experiencing the impacts of climate change. Severe storms, coastal inundation, rising sea level and sea surface temperatures are threatening safety and food security of more than 120 million people that depend directly on local marine and coastal resources for their income and livelihoods. Climate change is emerging as a serious issue for our region's communities. The Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) was founded on the commitment of the six Coral Triangle countries (CT6): Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Timor-leste and the Solomon Islands, to accelerate efforts to safeguard the coastal and marine resources and communities. As part of this commitment, the CT6 embodies Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) as one of the five key goals within the CTI-CFF Regional Plan of Action, pledging to implement actions to reduce the impacts of and adapt to climate change"--Introduction.
