Boost student autonomy and empowerment in the classroom to cultivate leadership skills and develop the entrepreneurs of the future. The book shares strategies for teaching skills that are key to being a successful leader, such as applying creativity to teach adaptability and resilience, and encouraging thoughtful risk-taking to foster confident decision-making. It also shares how to teach problem-solving skills, with case studies showing how to apply principles of design thinking and reverse engineering to come to effective solutions. Using emerging technologies to aid problem-solving is also addressed. Shaping Tomorrow’s World tells the crucial story of how futures studies developed in West Germany, Europe, the US and within global futures networks from the 1940s to the 1980s. It charts the emergence of different approaches and thought styles within the field ranging from Cold War defense intellectuals such as Herman Kahn to critical peace activists like Robert Jungk. Engaging with the challenges of the looming nuclear war, the changing phases of the Cold War, ‘1968’, and the growing importance of both the Global South and environmentalism, this book argues that futures scholars actively contributed to these processes of change. This multiple award-winning study combines national and transnational perspectives to present a unique history of envisioning, forecasting, and shaping the future.

This work includes forewords by Sir Kenneth Calman, Lynn Calman, and Rita Charon. Respectively Vice-Chancellor and Warden, University of Durham and former Chief Medical Officer for England; Research Associate, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work, University of Manchester; Professor of Clinical Medicine, College of Physicians and Surgeons, University of Columbia, New York, USA. "Today's Students, Tomorrow's Doctors" offers actual accounts of life as a trainee junior doctor in the health service today. It is an intriguing read which includes student contributions that are witty, humorous, poignant and sometimes harrowing. With a strong focus on the personal, powerful and emotional experiences of trainee and junior doctors, this unique book challenges medical educators to understand the demands placed on graduates and will stimulate change and curriculum development. The book is also a great reference for medical students - preparing them for the realities of ward life. It aids in developing an understanding of the skills and experience required to survive and thrive in the healthcare environment. This is an invaluable resource for medical educators in both work-based and university roles. It will also be of great interest to healthcare managers and curriculum developers and shapers. 'A joy to read, full of hope. We were delighted, surprised and at times concerned. Delighted because of the issues raised and the sophisticated ways in which students responded to the challenges; surprised at the range of issues raised and the obvious importance of relationships in the clinical setting; finally concerned at some of the attitudes which were commented on, especially of senior staff, and on the adequacy of preparation for house officer posts. This book is inspirational and should be read by all who have any part to play in the education of doctors.' - Sir Kenneth Calman and Lynne Calman, in their Foreword. 'Extraordinary. This is autobiographical insight at its most powerful, for it leads to transformative growth and true learning. I am first of all impressed with the emotional valence of these writings. They reflect the students' interior states of sadness, empathy, and awe as they bear witness to patients' suffering. The essays reflect a fresh calculus of sickness and duty [and] give me great and glad hope that our doctors of the future will be efficient with the forms of medicine as well as courageous in braving their contact with the ill, with the dying, with the humans who confront them evermore seeking care, seeking comfort, seeking their full capacity to heal.' - Rita Charon, in her Foreword.

In 1963 I learned to type in a verymight I say Controlled Environment called IGS Little did I know how much I would love to type. 100wpm error free became my passion and favorite pastime. Years later, sitting at an old manual typewriter I bought at a garage sale for $5.00, That little machine became my best friend, As I journeyed through what I now know as being my journey of healing and reflection. Writing was an incredible outlet for me. I loved it, and still do! Today many of those typewritten pages are yellowed and tattered, They hold prophetic truths that I embrace to this day. The next few pages are dedicated to those seasons in my life. All, and I do mean ALL, inspired by real people and real situations. To my husband, my son, my God given sisters, family and friends Who listened and supported me totally along the way I sincerely say Thank You for being breeze beneath my wings. A special thank you to my photographer ?

In all my years of travel I have seldom met anyone as sagacious as Henry Zeiter, and even more seldom have I met anyone more widely read. He knows a great deal about a great many things and something about almost everything else! This new volume of his musings will enrich anyone blessed enough to read it. Joseph Pearce, Author, Biographer of C.S. Lewis, J.R. Tolkien, Oscar Wilde, Solzhenitsyn, Chesterton, others Writer in Residence, Ave Maria University Many thanks to Dr. Henry Zeiter for collecting and sharing insights gathered over many years. I am amazed at the variety ranging from intensely personal reflections on to struggles of daily life to impressive literary, philosophical, and medical analyses. I especially recommend his essay on James Joyce; it is written with real feeling for a tortured soul Brian T. Kelly, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy, Mathematics and Science, Dean of Thomas Aquinas College, Santa, Paula, California Dr. Zeiter has lived intensely, and experienced the whole ride on the emotional rollercoaster. He has observed much, learned some, and reflected a lot on life. We can learn from him.and there is a great connection between learning and fully living. There is a memorable line in the movie The Shawshank Redemption: Get busy livingor get busy dying Henry Zeiter will certainly help you get busy living. Read his material slowly. Taste it, digest it in small bites, and reflect on it. That way you can enjoy the meal and absorb it in your own way. Dr. J. Mitchell Perry, JM Perry Learning Center, Ventura, California

A groundbreaking exploration of the most promising new ideas for creating the sustainable cities of tomorrow The culmination of a four-year collaborative research project undertaken by leading UK universities, in partnership with city authorities, prominent architecture firms, and major international consultants, Retrofitting Cities for Tomorrow's World explores the theoretical and practical aspects of the transition towards sustainability in the built environment that will occur in the years ahead. The emphasis throughout is on emerging systems innovations and bold new ways of imagining and re-imagining urban retrofitting, set within the context of ‘futures-based’ thinking. The concept of urban retrofitting has gained prominence within both the research and policy arenas in recent years. While cities are often viewed as a source of environmental stress and resource depletion they are also hubs of learning and innovation offering enormous potential for scaling up technological responses. But city-level action will require a major shift in thinking and a scaling up of positive responses to climate change and the associated threats of environmental and social degradation. Clearly the time has come for a more coordinated, planned, and strategic approach that will allow cities to transition to a sustainable future. This book summarizes many of the best new ideas currently in play on how to achieve those goals. Reviews the most promising ideas for how to approach planning and coordinating a more sustainable urban future by 2050 through retrofitting existing structures Explores how cities need to govern for urban retrofit and how future urban transitions and pathways can be managed, modeled and navigated Offers inter-disciplinary insights from international contributors from both the academic and professional spheres Develops a rigorous conceptual framework for analyzing existing challenges and fostering innovative ways of addressing those challenges Retrofitting Cities for Tomorrow's World is must-reading for academic researchers, including postgraduates insustainability, urban planning, environmental studies, economics, among other fields. It is also an important source of fresh ideas and inspiration for town planners, developers, policy advisors, and consultants working within the field of sustainability, energy, and the urban environment.
