2020 was the year in which George Floyd was killed and COVID-19 struck the world. In May, demonstrations raged and then COVID lockdowns just barely smothered the flames, leaving the embers red hot amongst the dry tinder of society’s privilege. Against this backdrop, Aikido, the Way of Peace, faltered, with systemic racism and physical distancing eviscerating the ability to practice within the confines of a dojo. This book will remind Aikidokas of O Sensei’s original teachings. Aikido is more than physical technique that applauds athleticism and crowd appeal. There is a dimension of personal and societal development hidden in O Sensei’s lectures and dokas. O Sensei’s vision of Aikido went beyond technique, beyond white privilege and beyond a COVID pandemic. Selected quotes from The Heart of Aikido and The Secret Teachings of Aikido appear at the beginning of each chapter, followed by poems that explore O Sensei’s underlying intent and meaning. This book will help Aikidokas of all levels to get in touch with O Sensei’s vision to help society to build a more peaceful world.

Aikido, a Japanese martial art developed by Master Morihei Uyeshiba, is more than just a martial art: Underlying its self-defense techniques is a philosophy and spirituality with practical application in daily life. If modern "life is war," then aikido provides the path to victory and meaningful living: a paradoxical blend of strength through perceived weakness, of winning by yielding. This is not a technical book on aikido techniques but rather shows how selected 8 key principles provide a guide to a meaningful, richer life. Rather than a cook-book approach, it aims to inform and nudge the reader towards self-reflection. Each chapter commences with a description of a principle, relates it to daily living, and ends with "Reflection" questions that invite the reader to further reflection on applying the principle to daily life. This book can therefore be used for self-growth, enhance conflict resolution abilities, spiritual development regardless of one's religion, improve knowledge of aikido, or as a philosophical discourse.

Morihei Ueshiba founded the martial art Aikido, believing that the combination of mental and physical training would allow Aikido practitioners to make a difference in their lives. With time, that difference, born out of activity and stillness, would ripple outwards to bring about a more peaceful world. O Sensei left us with many lectures, poems, and calligraphy guiding not only the physical practice but the mental practice of Aikido in the pursuit of unifying body and mind. Despite this, many Aikido instructors and students focus solely on the physical training aspect. This book is not only an introduction to O Sensei’s words and wisdom but to Don Dickie’s interpretation of those guiding principles as an accomplished practitioner and teacher of Aikido. This manual is an essential resource—borne of lived experience and years of observation—that will help Aikido practitioners of all ages and levels deepen and evolve their practice. Divided into three parts, it explores the physical, mental, and practical dimensions of Aikido: part one looks at common pitfalls and misconceptions in the physical training; part two provides instruction in meditation and how to integrate it into the physical technique practice; and part three examines how to experience mind-body unity and bring the benefits of that practice into the practitioners’ daily lives.

This definitive, profusely illustrated manual covers the essential elements of the philosophy and practice of Aikido, the Japanese martial art that has been embraced by modern psychology and many Western bodywork therapies. Useful to the beginner and experienced practitioner alike, the book details the traditional methods and techniques of Shirata Rinjiro, of whom John Stevens is a principal student. Noted for the precise execution of a wide range of techniques and an emphasis on Aikido as a spiritual path, Shirata Sensei's teachings exemplify the way of the warrior: superior technical prowess combined with profound spiritual insight. In addition to photographs and descriptions of all the important Aikido techniques, Stevens recounts interesting and lively anecdotes about the history of Aikido and its founder, Ueshiba Morihei, who developed it from a martial art into a spiritual discipline. A biography of Shirata Sensei, complete with his reflections on sixty years of Aikido practice, is also included.

Alex Essani, the Aikido teacher and practitioner, whose thoughts about the practice of Aikido are expressed in this book, does not actually exist - he is a fictitious character invented by the author as a means of exploring ideas. However, the training philosophy and methods attributed to Alex Essani are definitely not fictitious: they are based on the author's personal experiences with real Aikido instructors, in particular his current sensei, and on many years of practising, studying and teaching Aikido. The conversations between the two main characters, Alex Essani and his student Ian, are inventions used illustrate an important principle or concept. As the author's real Aikido teacher would put it after telling a tall story, "This is a true story; only the facts have been changed"; insofar as the author has fictionalised real incidents and conversations, this book is the same - it is fiction based on fact.In this third edition the author has replaced and improved all of the images, edited a number of chapters and added two more. He has also omitted the final part of the book, previously devoted to technique notes, as there are currently many excellent books devoted entirely to this aspect of Aikido training, including "Essential Aikido" written by the author.

The counterpoint to the famed Art of War, Aikido’s founding master Morihei Ueshiba offers timeless teachings on fearlessness, compassion, love of nature, and victory over conflict through the practice of peace. The inspirational teachings in this collection show that the real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. The teachings are drawn from the talks and writings of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of the popular Japanese martial art of Aikido—a mind-body discipline he called the “Art of Peace,”—which offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict. Ueshiba believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life—in personal and business relationships and in our interactions with society. This is an expanded version of the original miniature edition that appeared in the Shambhala Pocket Classics series. It features a new introduction by John Stevens, translated doka (didactic “poems of the Way”), and Ueshiba’s own calligraphy.

Aikido is based on the fundamental principle to not harm or kill any human being. To translate this principle into practice takes enormous understanding, knowledge and commitment to do what is genuinely fair. The principle is examined in the life and work of Grant B. Cooper, who was considered the top trial lawyer of his generation and wrote the Code of Trial Conduct for the American College of Trial Lawyers.

The Aiki Way is the second in the series of books by Grant A. Miller that deal with the history and lineage of the Aiki based arts, including Hapkido. Miller, a student and researcher on the history of martial arts, delves deeply into the Hapkido system that was developed by its founder the legendary Ji, Han Jae. "Master Grant Miller has put his untiring efforts to link together the roots and origins of Aiki Jutsu, Hapkido and Aikido into this book. He illustrates from hours of research how it has impacted today's practitioners and their techniques. As he did with his previous book, The Samurai Way, he continues to show the lineage and origins of these arts and their commonality and shared historical background by crossing the paths and techniques that can be used in similar applications. The information Master Miller compiled has proven that when applied, will enhance each art and discipline." Grandmaster John K. Barton“Master Miller has boldly brought together important and historical information, philosophy, and facts that link the old, the new, and the full circle of the traditional martial arts, including those of both Japan and Korea. Martial artist of all ages, ranks, and styles will want to read this work...and then read it again.” Grandmaster Ken MacKenzie

Drawing on the poetic wisdom of the Tao Te Ching, American sensei Wendy Palmer translates the powerful teachings of aikido for use in everyday life. With poignant reflections on her own life, including teaching inmates in a woman's federal prison, she describes how we can regain our sense of freedom, vitality, and integrity when under the duress of life's "attacks" by transforming our negativity into budo, or unconditional love. The Practice of Freedom is invaluable not only for students of aikido and other movement and martial arts, but also for those who seek to live with confidence and self-reliance, to establish clear and compassionate boundaries, and to deepen their capacities for relationships.
