El tratamiento que allí se daba a los símbolos reales y su ordenamiento en un complejo cuadro ceremonial llegó a convertir la ausencia física del Rey en una presencia simbólica constante e imprescindible. El análisis detallado de los ceremoniales y de la etiqueta ha permitido definir la conducta recíproca de los cortesanos provinciales, que fue la que hizo posible la comunicación entre el centro del poder y las comunidades políticas americanas. Como en toda relación de sociedad cortesana, el nexo entre el Rey y sus subditos del Nuevo Mundo formaba parte de un amplio conjunto de intercambios múltiples y recíprocos de favores, basados en un sistema de fidelidades y lealtades.
