Com uma profunda reflexão sobre a citação de Eclesiastes, em Reflexões sobre a Vaidade dos Homens, cuja primeira edição é de 1752, Matias Aires Ramos da Silva de Eça faz considerações acerca da vida e do comportamento humano, uma vez que, no seu entender, os homens cuidam mais das aparências que das substâncias e se ocupam de viver de mentiras e não de verdades. Considerado o primeiro filósofo brasileiro, desenvolveu uma “filosofia baseada em aforismos, parecida à dos moralistas franceses La Rochefoucauld, Bossuet e La Bruyère”, como bem aponta Alceu Amoroso Lima, escritor e filósofo do século XX, ao prefaciar a obra desse pensador, que nasceu no Brasil, mas viveu e produziu toda a sua obra em Portugal. Ao considerar a vaidade como a grande paixão humana, o autor faz uma análise na qual os sentimentos se incorporam e se unem de tal forma a nós, que vêm a ficar sendo uma parte de nós mesmos. Desse ponto, conclui que a mais vã de todas as vaidades é a que resulta do saber, porquanto “no homem não há pensamento que mais o agrade do que aquele que o representa superior aos demais, que é nele a parte mais sublime”. A presente edição traz primorosas ilustrações de Santa Rosa.
