El Pensamiento Geográfico tiene gran valor formativo para los estudiantes de educación básica, ya que les aporta una visión integral del mundo que los rodea, desde lo más próximo hasta lo más remoto. Pensar geográficamente, supone la puesta en práctica de conocimientos, habilidades y disposiciones para representar las relaciones que constituyen el espacio geográfico, el territorio como contexto de distintas actividades humanas y afinar la capacidad de observar e identificar las múltiples interacciones que se establecen entre el ser humano y su medio. Este estudio tiene por objetivo analizar si los profesores y profesoras que imparten la asignatura de Historia, Geografía y Ciencias Sociales, están desarrollando el Pensamiento Geográfico en sus clases. Será llevado a cabo durante el año 2016 específicamente en sexto año básico, en tres escuelas de dependencias municipales y particulares subvencionadas de las comunas de Los Ángeles, Mulchén y Cabrero. Los instrumentos utilizados para recoger información, fueron la entrevista semiestructurada que se aplicó a cada profesor o profesora que imparte la asignatura, y una observación de campo de las clases realizadas por estos. La información obtenida como resultado de los instrumentos, será analizada a la luz de la teoría fundamentada. Para obtener conclusiones se realizará una triangulación de la información entre los objetivos, teoría y resultados de los instrumentos aplicados. Finalmente, se diseñará una propuesta pedagógica factible de realizar dentro de una unidad de Geografía que contengan las bases curriculares para este curso. Su objetivo u eje central es el desarrollo del Pensamiento Geográfico a través de diversas actividades didácticas.
