The contemporary historical research situates Luther's Reformation in a much larger context of Christian reform movements that emerge in the late medieval and early modern period. Against this background the enlightened view of Luther as protagonist of the modern era is in need of revision. The variety of reform movements together with the Renaissance humanism compose a rich reservoir of spiritual reforms that will all influence the further development of the modern era. In this volume, this complex of the variety of Christian reforms relative to modernity is elaborated through exemplary studies from a philosophical-theological perspective.

What caused Luther, Calvin, and others to set in motion the Reformation—and what are the consequences, both then and now? Is the 500-year-old breach between Rome and the Protestant church still necessary today? Does the Reformation even matter anymore? In commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, along with the 25th anniversary of Modern Reformation magazine, The Reformation, Then and Now is a compendium of articles that illuminate the history and impact of the Protestant Reformation over the past 500 years. Although the questions above don't have easy answers, over forty articles written by some of the most trusted voices across the Reformation spectrum offer readers a historical and spiritual walk through the Reformation by addressing the cause, the characters, and the consequences. A few contributions include: "The State of the Church Before the Reformation" by Alister McGrath, "The Shape of the Reformation" by Michael Allen, "Luther on the Freedom and Bondage of the Will" by R. Scott Clark, "Who Was Arminius?" by W. Robert Godfrey, "Predestination and Assurance in Reformed Theology" by Michael Horton, "Celebrating Calvin: Ten Ways Modern Culture Is Different Because of John Calvin" by David Hall, "The Journey to Geneva: Calvin and Karl Barth" by Peter D. Anders.

Counter Reformation, Catholic Reformation, the Baroque Age, the Tridentine Age, the Confessional Age: why does Catholicism in the early modern era go by so many names? And what political situations, what religious and cultural prejudices in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries gave rise to this confusion? Taking up these questions, John O'Malley works out a remarkable guide to the intellectual and historical developments behind the concepts of Catholic reform, the Counter Reformation, and, in his felicitous term, Early Modern Catholicism. The result is the single best overview of scholarship on Catholicism in early modern Europe, delivered in a pithy, lucid, and entertaining style. Although its subject is fundamental to virtually all other issues relating to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Europe, there is no other book like this in any language. More than a historiographical review, Trent and All That makes a compelling case for subsuming the present confusion of terminology under the concept of Early Modern Catholicism. The term indicates clearly what this book so eloquently demonstrates: that Early Modern Catholicism was an aspect of early modern history, which it strongly influenced and by which it was itself in large measure determined. As a reviewer commented, O'Malley's discussion of terminology opens up a different way of conceiving of the whole history of Catholicism between the Reformation and the French Revolution.

In The Radical Reformation and the Making of Modern Europe, Mario Biagioni presents an account of the lives and thoughts of some radical reformers of the sixteenth century (Bernardino Ochino, Francesco Pucci, Fausto Sozzini, and Christian Francken), showing that the Radical Reformation was not merely a subplot of heretical history within the larger narrative of the Magisterial Reformation. Religious radicalism was primarily an extraordinary laboratory of ideas, which played a pivotal role in the rise of modern Europe: it influenced the intellectual process leading to the cultural revolution of the Enlightenment. Secularism, toleration, and rationalism ― three basic principles of Western civilization ― are part of its cultural heritage.

Excerpt from A Popular History of the Reformation and Modern Protestantism But the Papacy had not been always in the hands of unworthy or contemptible tenants. Again and again it had been occupied by men who, judged merely as statesmen, were a match for kings like Temporalpowe, Frederick I. Of Germany, Henry II. Of England, and Louis IX. Of the Papacy' of France. From being a nominee of the Frankish emperor, needing also his confirmation when elected, the Pope had come to be elected, inde pendently of any outside power, by the College of Cardinals, and claimed, and often exercised a practical dictatorship over the haughtiest and most powerful temporal princes. This was made effectual by the judicious use of pecuniary in uence, by skilfully playing off prince against prince, by utilising rivalries, jealousies and suspicions, and above all'by the terrors of the power of the keys, which - extended from the terrestrial to the supernal sphere - could forbid all church services for the living or for the dead, and, it was fondly believed, exclude from or admit to heaven, or shorten or intensify the sufferings of purgatorial purification. A church that could not err, popes above all judgment, claiming to depose emperors, and to absolve subjects from their allegiance - is it to be wondered at that the triumph of such ideas marked the beginning of their downfall - that human nature, when completely trodden under foot, should turn, and gathering strength, rend its tyrant?
