"I applaud you Russell, this is an accurate way of thinking. As an RN who has been working in a hospital for 30 year and observing and working for a system of healthcare that is costly and hitting the problems with more insurance billing for conditions that could be eliminated with diet and stress management your book is right on!" At age 49, Russell Stamets was diagnosed with Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA). He was told it was irreversible and that he faced a daily shot in the stomach. Unwilling to accept western medicine's only option, insulin, Russell looked east. He researched, designed a plan, and tested it on himself. Against all odds, he succeeded in lowering his blood sugar levels and reviving his pancreas. Russell provides the details of his diet, supplements, and lifestyle (including meditation) delivered with a dose of humor, irreverence, and verse. Any type of diabetic, pre-diabetic, or anyone looking for a sane, sustainable way to achieve incredibly good health will appreciate this book.

The controversy surrounding childhood vaccinations and their purported, if scientifically unfounded, connections to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and other real or perceived "vaccine injuries" is a matter of growing concern to the fields of Health Communication and Population Health. Both proponents and opponents of childhood vaccination have taken to online forums and Web 2.0 applications to debate the issue--both sides citing their own "facts" and credentialed experts. The contemporary information environment allows those with deeply rooted health beliefs--e.g. favoring or opposing childhood vaccinations--the opportunity to seek and find attitude-confirming information, at the expense of rational debate over diverse perspectives. The Internet, with its proliferation of choice, and a populace increasingly polarized around contentious issues have revived old concerns about selective exposure. However, while some evidence supports the notion of selectivity, no research has shown a causal link between exposure to congenial or uncongenial mass media content and subsequent selectivity. In this study we recruited a sample of partisans on either side of the issue of childhood vaccinations and developed a quasi-experimental design, testing the effects of congenial, neutral, and uncongenial online news articles on partisans' subsequent information choices. While we found limited evidence to suggest a direct relationship between exposure to congenial versus uncongenial (or neutral) information and subsequent selectivity, our results suggested that exposure to the stimuli indirectly affected selectivity via perceived stimulus bias and--to a greater degree--affective response to the stimulus content. These results support an important, and previously undocumented, theoretical link between hostile media effect, mood management, and selective exposure literature and provide insight for health campaign designs.

Whether it’s dogs, spiders, blood, heights or some other fear, specific phobias are one of the most prevalent mental health problems, affecting as many as one in eight people. In recent years, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has emerged as particularly effective in treating young people and adults with specific phobias. And of these methods, one-session treatment stands out as a long-lasting, cost-effective intervention of choice. Intensive One-Session Treatment of Specific Phobias not only provides a summary of the evidence base, it also serves as a practical reference and training guide. This concise volume examines the phenomenology, epidemiology, and etiology of phobias, laying the groundwork for subsequent discussion of assessment strategies, empirically sound one-session treatment methods, and special topics. In addition, expert contributors address challenges common to exposure therapy, offer age-appropriate guidelines for treating young clients, and describe innovative computer-assisted techniques. Organized to be read individually or in sequence, chapters delve into key areas, including: Evidence-based assessment and treatment of specific phobias in children, adolescents, and adults. One-session treatment theory and practice with children, adolescents, and adults. Handling difficult cases of specific phobias in youth. Interventions for specific phobias in special populations. Training and assessing therapists in one-session treatment. Ethical issues in considering exposure. Intensive One-Session Treatment of Specific Phobias is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians, and graduate students in child, school, clinical, and counseling psychology; social work; and general and special education.

Preventing Hiv Transmission written by National Research Council and Institute of Medicine and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-09-14 with Medical categories.

This volume addresses the interface of two major national problems: the epidemic of HIV-AIDS and the widespread use of illegal injection drugs. Should communities have the option of giving drug users sterile needles or bleach for cleaning needs in order to reduce the spread of HIV? Does needle distribution worsen the drug problem, as opponents of such programs argue? Do they reduce the spread of other serious diseases, such as hepatitis? Do they result in more used needles being carelessly discarded in the community? The panel takes a critical look at the available data on needle exchange and bleach distribution programs, reaches conclusions about their efficacy, and offers concrete recommendations for public policy to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. The book includes current knowledge about the epidemiologies of HIV/AIDS and injection drug use; characteristics of needle exchange and bleach distribution programs and views on those programs from diverse community groups; and a discussion of laws designed to control possession of needles, their impact on needle sharing among injection drug users, and their implications for needle exchange programs.

Cambridge-educated Sir Saraswati Chandra Ranbakshi is a towering public figure in early twentieth century India. A firm believer in the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, he also has faith in the virtues of the British Raj. As a result, he has to mediate between the Maharaja of a princely state and the Viceroy and strike a fine balance between tradition and modernity. This tussle between old and new values is reflected in his three children, the daredevil Maneka, the timid Sita, and their brother, Yogendra, who turns their father’s world upside down by falling in love with a lower-caste girl. A comedy of manners laced with intrigue and excitement, The Tailor’s Needle explores some of the great moral dilemmas of pre-independent India with wit and sensitivity.
