On oublie qu'aux toutes premières années de ce siècle, le continent antarctique n'était repéré que sur une partie de son pourtour. L'une des théories des géographes d'alors voulait d'ailleurs que le pôle Sud fût situé non pas sur ce continent (qui n'était sans doute, pensait-on qu'un groupe d'îles) mais au milieu d'une mer, peut-être libre de glaces. Bref, la dernière tache blanche de la planète restait encore totalement à explorer. Après l'échec de la première expédition de Scott (1901), à laquelle il avait participé, le bouillant Shackleton vend tout ce qu'il possède, arme en 1908 un petit phoquier, le Nimrod et décide ni plus ni moins d'atteindre le pôle Sud avec les moyens du bord. Il y réussira presque...mais l'on n'aura pas la cruauté de révéler ici le détail de son ahurissante aventure : le lecteur qui est prêt à se plonger dans ces pages ne nous le pardonnerait pas. Qu'il nous suffise de dire que ceux qui ont déjà eu la bonne fortune de dévorer l'autre grand livre de Sir Ernest (L'Odyssée de l'Endurance, Phébus 1988) retrouveront dans celui-ci le même miracle : le pur souffle de l'aventure, en compagnie d'un homme qui ne pouvait respirer qu'à l'altitude de l'impossible.

The mobilisation centred on the 2015 Paris Climate Conference (COP 21) is an opportunity to highlight the vulnerability of environments and populations in the South in the face of climate warming.
