Ce recueil de 20 articles, écrits pendant une dizaine d'années (2004-2014), met en valeur des aspects révélateurs d'une identité propre aux cinématographies du Maghreb. Certaines constantes se sont imposées, permettant un regroupement en trois ensembles. Apparaît d'abord l'importance de la question des femmes ou du féminin. Le statut particulier des femmes maghrébines puise sa source dans un patriarcat ancien, dont les traits caractéristiques ont fait preuve d'une remarquable longévité. Mais on verra aussi au fil des articles une forte évolution chronologique dont les effets sont d'abord positifs avant la catastrophe qu'a été le surgissement du terrorisme intégriste. Cependant le plus grand nombre des articles ici réunis entrent dans la vaste rubrique Histoire, politique et société. Les cinéastes maghrébins travaillent dans l'urgence d'une histoire dévorante, où les souvenirs d'un proche passé vident sont rejoints par l'évocation de nouvelles violences non moins présentes et agissantes. La production cinématographique maghrébine les dénonce sans réserve, alors même qu'elles sont parfois ou souvent le fait du pouvoir officiel. La dimension critique de ces cinémas est considérable, elle est pour ainsi dire leur raison d'être. Réalisateurs, réalisatrices : tel est le titre qui s'est imposé pour la troisième partie du recueil, car les pays du Maghreb se caractérisent aussi par la force des individualités qui s'y affirment. C'est bien la preuve qu'il s'agit d'artistes, qui imposent à l'évidence leur savoir-faire cinématographique.

Roots of the New Arab Film deals with the generation of filmmakers from across North Africa and the Middle East who created an international awareness of Arab film from the mid-1980s onwards. This book analyzes the rise of socially and politically engaged Algerian documentaries, created in the period immediately following the end of the Algerian civil war (1991-1999). It uses case studies to highlight the works of four Algerian filmmakers, and devotes a chapter to each: Malek Bensmaïl, Hassen Ferhani, Djamel Kerkar, and Karim Sayad. The book makes visible productions that have been overlooked not only in distribution circuits but also within academia, and examines the political significance and the esthetic power of some of the most influential Algerian documentaries produced since the 2000s.
