Tânărul se îndrăgostește de Constance Bonacieux, soția gazdei sale și servitoarea Annei de Austria, care îi dezvăluie intriga montată de Richelieu împotriva reginei și îl trimite la Londra pentru a recupera bijuteriile oferite cu imprudență de Anne ducelui de Buckingham. După întoarcerea ei, Constance fiind întemnițată din ordinul lui Richelieu, d'Artagnan obține printr-o stratagemă favorurile lui Milady, descoperind astfel că a fost marcată cu un fier înroșit asemeni tâlharilor. Milady încearcă să-l omoare la asediul orașului La Rochelle.

El si Porthos il rapesc pe Ludovic al XIV-lea si il inlocuiesc cu fratele sau geaman, Philippe, care pana atunci era detinut in secret la Bastilia. Generozitatea lui opreste complotul. DArtagnan il conduce pe Philippe la noua sa inchisoare (unde fratele regelui va deveni omul cu masca de fier), apoi il aresteaza pe Fouquet. Armata regala ia cu asalt Belle-Ile, cetatea superintendentului, unde erau retrasi Aramis si Porthos. Al doilea este ucis, primul reuseste sa scape si se refugiaza in Spania. Intre timp, Monsieur, fratele mai mic si "oficial" al lui Ludovic al XIV-lea, s-a casatorit cu Henrietta Angliei, sora lui Carol al II-lea. In jurul tinerei printese, proaspat sosita in Franta, s-a format o curte colcaind de intrigi amoroase. Ludovic al XIV-lea insusi si-a curtat cumnata inainte de a seduce pe una dintre domnisoarele de onoare ale Henriettei: Mademoiselle de La Valliere, logodnica lui Raoul de Bragelonne. Disperat, tanarul este ucis intr-o expeditie impotriva piratilor din Barberia, iar Athos moare ti el. DArtagnan, dupa cum stie toata lumea, va fi la randul sau ucis in timpul asediului Maastricht-ului.
