Critics of liberal democracy from both the left and right view rights not as protectors of freedom but as impediments to self-determination and call for radically regenerative political alternatives. Liberals respond to these challenges by reasserting that universal rights are self-evident, intentionally foreclosing the possibility of remaking the political order. Regenerative Politics makes a bold intervention into this fraught landscape, arguing that the survival of rights depends on abandoning their claims to self-evidence. Emma Planinc argues that liberal democracies must open themselves up to a regenerative politics that accepts all claims against political convention as self-determinative—including those that desire the rejection of rights or the overturning of liberal democracies themselves. Bringing together scholarship on race, democracy, liberalism, fascism, and the far right with an intellectual history of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution and a novel account of human nature, Regenerative Politics offers a new political theory for the revitalization of politics. Planinc shows that liberal democracies can arm themselves against extreme challenges by remaining perpetually open to the reconstitution of rights, restoring the capacity for human beings to determine themselves in the world.

Regenerative medicine is a field characterized by a global struggle for scientific, economic and national advantage. Drawing on a wide range of interviews, primary and secondary sources, this book investigates the dynamic interactions between national regulatory formation and the global biopolitics of regenerative medicine and human embryonic stem cell science. Today governments are under intense competitive pressure to fund and develop attractive national environments for embryonic stem cell science, which promises both to improve the health and productivity of aging populations and to develop therapies for global health markets. This study traces the development of internationally circulating arguments for and against stem cell research, and the various transnational bioethical spaces that have opened up to try and steer these arguments towards compromise and implementation. It considers the flow of embryonic and reproductive biological materials from south to north, and the ways these flows play into broader relations around global biopolitics. It investigates the place of transnational regulatory bodies like the EU and the UN in organizing and modifying the international and national debates around stem cell science, and ways in which national debates and policies influence each other. It makes a major contribution to our understanding of the dynamics of power that fuels the emergence of global regenerative medicine in the age of biotechnology.

Regenerative Medicine Ethics written by Linda F. Hogle and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-19 with Science categories.

This book puts the ethics, policy and politics of stem cells into context in a way that helps readers understand why past and current issues have developed the way they have and what the implications are for their work going forward. It also addresses emerging issues as the field progresses towards clinical and industrial uses. While there is a superabundance of material on the ethics of embryo use and questions of embryonic "personhood," there is little that covers what practicing scientists and managers need to know in order to plan and execute responsible research. Furthermore, researchers funded by the NIH are required to have ethics training as a condition of the grant. As such, this book is an essential resource to all of these pre-professional students whether they plan to move into industry, government or academia.

The NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A radically new understanding of and practical approach to climate change by noted environmentalist and creator of Drawdown, Paul Hawken The dangers of climate change and a warming world have been in the public eye for fifty years. For three decades, scientists and the United Nations have urged us to address future existential threats. In Regeneration Paul Hawken has flipped the narrative, bringing people back into the conversation by demonstrating that addressing current human needs rather than future threats is the only path to solving the climate crisis. From land to ocean, food to industries - Regeneration proposes an extensive menu of actions that collectively can reverse the overheating and degradation of our planet. The solutions, techniques, and practices range from solar power, electric vehicles, and tree planting to bioregions, azolla fern and forest farms; they are all doable, science-based, and comprise a precise and unequivocal course of action. Whether you are an individual, community focused or a national government, Regeneration is a call to arms to mobilise and create a better future for ourselves on this planet.
