Modernism is typically associated with novelty and urbanity. So what happens when poets identify small communities and local languages with the spirit of transnational modernity? Are vernacular poetries inherently provincial or implicitly xenophobic? How did modernist poets use vernacular language to re-imagine the relations between people, their languages, and the communities in which they live? Nations of Nothing But Poetry answers these questions through case studies of British, Caribbean, and American poetries from the 1920s through the 1990s. With a combination of fresh insights and attentive close readings, Matthew Hart presents a new theory of a "synthetic vernacular"-writing that explores the aesthetic and ideological tensions within modernism's dual commitments to the local and the global. The result is an invigorating contribution to the field of transnational modernist studies. Chapters focus on a mixture of canonical and non-canonical writers, combining new literary histories--such as the story of how Melvin B. The end of the Cold War has changed the shape of organized violence in the world and the ways in which governments and others try to set its limits. Even the concept of international conflict is broadening to include ethnic conflicts and other kinds of violence within national borders that may affect international peace and security. What is not yet clear is whether or how these changes alter the way actors on the world scene should deal with conflict: Do the old methods still work? Are there new tools that could work better? International Conflict Resolution After the Cold War critically examines evidence on the effectiveness of a dozen approaches to managing or resolving conflict in the world to develop insights for conflict resolution practitioners. This volume is based in part upon observations made during a six months' visit to Indonesia between August 1956 and January 1957. After an initial period of five weeks spent in the Autonomy and Decentralization Division, Ministry of Internal Affairs, visits were made to three provinces - East Java, Central Sumatra and Sulawesi where, through the courtesy of local officials, facilities were provided for the study of the local government system at all levels. While it is necessary to draw attention to these geographical limitations of the enquiry, the three provinces were deliberately selected as samples with a view to enabling the study of varied and contrasting situations, and the observations made in the paper are couched in general terms, a further qualification must be made. The visits to Central Sumatra and Sulawesi were concluded before the changes of government in those provinces in December 1956 and March 1957. The comments referring specifically to the situations in these provinces have therefore been outstripped by events. It may be assumed, however, that the more permanent problems of local government planning will remain, and it has been thought desirable to describe the situations in the two areas as they were observed, except that some reference to subsequent changes is made in the concluding section of the paper. About Cornell Modern Indonesian Project Interim Reports This title was originally published as an "Interim Report" in the Cornell Modern Indonesia Project (CMIP) series organized by the Cornell Southeast Asia Program. CMIP's first "Interim Report" appeared in 1956, during an era when little scholarship on Indonesia was available, and those studies that did appear often lagged far behind the actual events taking place in the country. George Kahin, director of CMIP at the time, explained in his foreword to the first "Interim Report" that these books were intended to address this lack of timely scholarship and encourage lively critical exchanges among researchers and readers. Therefore, as he explained, the "Interim Reports" would be "explicitly tentative and provisional in character." We believe that an understanding of this historical context is key to a full appreciation of these contributions to the study of Indonesia in the twentieth century.

In the last few decades, Southeast Asia has become generally more peaceful and more prosperous, with progress in economic development, regional cooperation and integration. ASEAN in particular plays a leading role within and beyond the region in promoting multilateral cooperation in both security and economic matters. All these developments progress amid increasing hegemonic competition between the US and China for regional dominance in the Asia-Pacific region. According to the realist viewpoint of international politics, Southeast Asian states can do nothing but choose sides at the expense of international political autonomy in order to maintain their national interests. Tang argues, however, that in fact there exists an opportunity for Southeast Asian states to simultaneously reinforce their military security, economic development and international political autonomy in face of the US-China hegemonic competition. Drawing on the ideas of power transition theory and recent works of capitalist peace, Tang argues that small states can exploit the competition between great powers to make economic gains and ensure security while maintaining their autonomy. He outlines the necessity of cooperation among these small states and of economic liberalization for the effectiveness of this reinforcing dynamics, applying policy and econometric analyses to a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data.
