Das Archiv für Geschichte des Buchwesens (AGB) wurde 1956 begründet. Das Archiv ist die zentrale wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift für die Buchwissenschaft sowie für die Buch- und Buchhandelsgeschichte. Es ist in führenden wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken international vertreten. Das Publikationsprofil des AGB bilden Abhandlungen zu allen nationalen und internationalen Themen der buchwissenschaftlichen und buchhistorischen Forschung. Dazu gehören medien-, kultur-, sozial- und geistesgeschichtliche wie auch technikgeschichtliche Perspektiven der Buchwissenschaft und Buchhandelsgeschichtsschreibung, die zum Beispiel folgende Aspekte thematisieren: Geschichte und Bedingungen von Autorschaft Geschichte des Urheberrechts Buchhandels- und Verlagsgeschichte Zensurgeschichte Bibliotheksgeschichte Historische Leserforschung Materialität des Buches und Geschichte einzelner Publikationsformen Das Buch im Medienkontext sowie Medienumbrüche. Publiziert werden darüber hinaus kommentierte Bibliographien und Kataloge zur Verlags- oder Bibliotheksgeschichte oder Dokumentationen mit Auswertung von Archivalien und anderen ungedruckten Materialien. Der Schwerpunkt der jeweiligen Bände liegt auf umfangreichen Quellen- und Materialstudien, hinzu kommen Aufsätze aus den genannten Themenschwerpunkten, Miszellen sowie Rezensionen und Forschungsberichte. Für sehr umfangreiche Forschungsarbeiten steht die Reihe Archiv für Geschichte des Buchwesen. Studien zur Verfügung. Das AGB nimmt interdisziplinäre Beiträge in deutscher oder englischer Sprache auf. Es richtet sich nicht nur an Buchwissenschaftler, sondern an alle Wissenschaftler, die medien- und kulturhistorische Themen bearbeiten. In über fünf Jahrzehnten sind im AGB zahlreiche Standardwerke erschienen, beispielhaft genannt seien: Rolf Engelsing: Der Bürger als Leser (Bd. 3, 1961); Heinrich Grimm: Die Buchführer des deutschen Kulturbereichs und ihre Niederlassungsorte in der Zeitspanne 1490 bis um 1550 (Bd. 7, 1967); Reinhard Wittmann: Die frühen Buchhändlerzeitschriften als Spiegel des literarischen Lebens (Bd. 13, 1973); Martin Vogel: Deutsche Urheber- und Verlagsrechtsgeschichte zwischen 1450 und 1850 (Bd. 19, 1978); Ursula Rautenberg: Die Entstehung und Entwicklung des Buchtitelblatts in der Inkunabelzeit in Deutschland, den Niederlanden und Venedig. Quantitative und qualitative Studien (Bd. 62, 2008).
