La scuola “logora”. Arrivo a casa sfinito. Ma con tutto questo, amo la scuola, e chissà se saprei abbandonarla davvero, come tante volte mi sono proposto di fare.» Così scriveva Giorgio Caproni nel registro di classe del 1962-63. Aveva cinquant’anni e da quasi trenta entrava in classe ogni mattina portando con sé il sogno di «una scuola né pedante né pesante, ma allegra e piena di scoperte». Fare il maestro elementare non rappresentò mai un ripiego: al contrario, fu un mestiere profondamente amato, esercitato con umiltà, dedizione, energia e inventiva. Sensibile, affettuoso, paziente, attento soprattutto agli allievi più disagiati e fragili, Caproni incantava i suoi ragazzi, facendone i protagonisti delle lezioni. Nina Quarenghi ha trascritto e raccolto in questo volume i registri compilati con cura dal poeta nella sua lunga carriera di insegnante, dapprima in Val Trebbia e ad Arenzano (1935-37), poi a Roma (1938-73). Scorrendone le pagine si resta stupiti per la varietà delle proposte didattiche spesso innovative, per la finezza con cui viene tratteggiato il profilo degli alunni, per i numerosi riferimenti alle trasformazioni sociali e culturali del paese. Rimasti a lungo inediti e pubblicati ora per la prima volta integralmente, i Registri di classe offrono un ritratto inatteso e sorprendente di uno dei più grandi poeti del Novecento, che tra i banchi di scuola come nei propri versi ha sempre cercato la verità dell’uomo.
