This work looks at Sierra Leone, its people and history. Other subjects are also covered to provide a general introduction to the country. It is not intended for academic specialists, and it is not an in-depth study of the country. It is written from the perspective of a layman or general reader who simply wants to know some important things about this West African country. Sierra Leone is one of the oldest countries in Africa. And before it won independence in 1961, it was also one of the oldest colonies on the continent. Only two African countries won independence in 1961, both from the same colonial power, Great Britain. They were Sierra Leone, on 27 April, and Tanganyika on 9 December. The history of Sierra Leone is also one of the most tragic. But Sierra Leone still is one of the most fascinating countries on the continent in spite of the horrendous tragedy it went through during the civil war in the 1990s. The fact that it emerged intact from that brutal conflict is strong testimony to the resilience of the Sierra Leonean people against overwhelming odds which could have broken weaker souls.

The first in a series of inside histories, Peacekeeping in Sierra Leone relates how a small country one insignificant in the strategic considerations of the world powers propelled the United Nations to center stage in a crisis that called its very authority into serious question; and how the UN mission in Sierra Leone was transformed from its nadir into what is now widely considered one of the most successful peacekeeping missions in UN history. moments, and the reasoning behind strategic decisions. She also captures UNAMSIL's internal struggle as it fought to regain some honor after the May 2000 crisis, when the UN had to rely on the infamous Charles Taylor to broker the release of 500 peacekeeper hostages. UNAMSIL mission, but also reflects on its meaning for current and future peace operations in Africa and beyond.

Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ... them as commands from our employers which cannot be attended to. I am as anxious, and my heart is as warmly attached to the cause as the most zealous of the directors; but the information they require cannot be furnished them, neither can the regulations they propose be accomplished till the colony becomes more settled, and the different departments more effective. . . . 'In the evening I received a letter from John S, sent out by the company as overseer of lands, and as I am daily receiving similar applications from a variety of people, I shall copy his letter and enclosure: -- '" SlR, --I and my family are quite starving. We have had not a bit of bread for near three weeks, only half a pound of meat a day. If that can be proper for two young children to support and nourish them, I should be satisfied. I must beg you will have the goodness to make an alteration for the better. I and my wife are dying by inches, really, for want of proper support; we cannot stand it any longer. I have sent a copy of agreement from the court of directors in London.--Sir, your obliged servant, '"john S . '" Free Town, %tk May 1792." 'What a pity it is that the directors should have encouraged, as they appear to have done, a number of women and children coming out at the commencement of a colony! In the upper order of servants it has been attended with the greatest possible evil, for it has been the cause of much jealousy and bad feelings altogether, which will not easily be eradicated. To this fatal measure I should be inclined to attribute the violent party spirit which has been so prominent in the colony. And in the lower order of servants it has already been attended, in many instances, with the most distressing and fatal consequences, and, I have too...

The ex-slave, Krio population of Freetown, Sierra Leone - an amalgam of ethnicities drawn from several parts of the African continent - is a fascinating study in hybridity, creolization, European cultural penetration, the retention of African cultural values, and the interface between New World returnees and autochthonous populations of West Africa. Although its Nigerian connections are often acknowledged, insufficient attention has been paid to the indigenous Sierra Leonean roots of this community. This anthology addresses this problem, while celebrating the complexities of Krio identity and Krio interaction with other ethnic groups and nationalities in the British colonial experience.

Sierra Leone came to world attention in the 1990s when a catastrophic civil war linked to the diamond trade was reported globally. This fleeting and particular interest, however, obscured two crucial processes in this small West African state. On the one hand, while the civil war was momentous, brutal and affected all Sierra Leoneans, it was also just one element in the long and faltering attempt to build a nation and state given the country's immensely problematic pre-colonial and British colonial legacies. On the other, the aftermath of the war precipitated a huge international effort to construct a 'liberal peace', with mixed results, and thus made Sierra Leone a laboratory for post-Cold War interventions. Sierra Leone examines 225 years of its history and fifty years of independence, placing state- society relations at the centre of an original and revealing investigation of those who have tried to rule or change Sierra Leone and its inhabitants and the responses engendered. It interweaves the historical narrative with sketches of politicians, anecdotes, the landscape and environment and key turning-points, alongside theoretical and other comparisons with the rest of Africa. It is a new contribution to the debate for those who already know Sierra Leone and a solid point of entry for those who wish to know.

During the colonial era very little thought was given to the promotion of African history and culture in African educational institutions. Most colonial educationalists stubbornly refused to appreciate that Africa had a history worth talking about.
