Alexander von Humboldt ist jedermann als einer der größten deutschen Forschungsreisenden und Geographen ein Begriff. Vor allem wurde er bekannt als der "wissenschaftliche Entdecker" des südamerikanischen Halbkontinents.Kaum bekannt ist indes seine russisch-sibirische Forschungsreise vom 12. April bis 15. Dezember 1829. Mit 12 244 Pferden und Halt auf 658 Poststationen reiste er 14.900 km von St. Petersburg über Moskau, Kasan, über den Ural nach Tobolsk, besuchte das Altai-Gebirge, durchstreifte die Kirgisensteppe und kehrte über Astrachan am Kaspischen Meer durch das wolgadeutsche Gebiet nach St. Petersburg zurück.Humboldt reiste nicht nur wegen der Geologie, Klimatologie und des Erdmagnetismus sowie "Bergwerksbesichtigungen" nach Rußland, sondern weil ihn dieses gewaltige und kaum erforschte Land und seine Menschen faszinierten. Humboldt selbst hat über diese Reise nur in wenigen Briefen berichtet, Details der Reise schilderte sein Begleiter Rose. Dieser trockene Bericht von Rose enthält nur einen Teil der fachwissenschaftlichen Resultate der Reise. Dem Herausgeber des vorliegenden Werkes, Professor Hanno Beck, ist es zu verdanken, dass wir hier die erste reisegeschichtlich begründete Gesamtkonstruktion dieser Asien-Forschungsreise einem größeren Leserkreis vorlegen können.Sie erlaubt die geistige Begleitung Humboldts von Woche zu Woche: Von Berlin über das Baltikum, St. Petersburg, Moskau, den Ural, tief nach Sibirien hinein bis zur chinesischen Grenze.
