Rekayasa lalu lintas (traffic engineering) adalah fase dari rekayasa transportasi yang berhubungan dengan perencanaan, perancangan, geometrik, operasional fasilitas jalan (jalan dan persimpangan), terminal dan hubungan antar moda transportasi. Permasalahan lalu lintas dari waktu ke waktu semakin kompleks. Untuk dapat memahami dan dalam upaya mencari solusinya, sangat diperlukan pemahaman terhadap karakteristik lalu lintas. Karakteristik lalu lintas merupakan hasil variasi interaksi yang komplek antara 4 (empat) komponen sistem lalu lintas yaitu pemakai jalan (road user), kendaraan (vehicles), jalan (road) dan pengaturan lalu lintas (control). Parameter lalu-lintas dibutuhkan untuk mempelajari dan menganalisis karakteristik lalu-lintas, yang meliputi: kecepatan, kepadatan, volume, headway, dan spacing. Dalam rangka untuk menganalisis parameter lalu lintas tersebut dan memahami kondisi lalu lintas, diperlukan proses pengumpulan data, yang meliputi survei inventarisasi geometrik jalan, survei volume lalu lintas, survei kecepatan, survei angkutan umum, survei preference, survei parkir dan survei pejalan kaki. Analisis karakteristik parkir dan pejalan kaki juga menjadi fokus uraian dari buku ini. Buku ini juga mengulas tentang teori antrian. Terjadinya antrian pada fasilitas transportasi akan mempengaruhi kinerjanya.
