Die Gegenüberstellung von „qualitativ“ und „quantitativ“, welche als zentrale Leitdifferenz die Auseinandersetzung in der empirischen Sozialforschung wesentlich bestimmt, erscheint methodologisch wenig begründet. Zentrale Differenzen lassen sich eher mit der Gegenüberstellung von rekonstruktiven und standardisierten Verfahren fassen. Das Buch stellt drei Wege rekonstruktiver Sozialforschung mit ihren Unterschieden und Gemeinsamkeiten vor: das Narrative Interview, die Objektive Hermeneutik und vor allem die Dokumentarische Methode. Es werden grundlegende Anforderungen diskutiert, welche an Methodologie und Forschungspraxis rekonstruktiver Sozialforschung zu stellen sind. Im Zentrum steht die vom Verfasser selbst entwickelte Dokumentarische Methode in ihren methodologischen Grundlagen und forschungspraktischen Verfahrensweisen im Bereich der Textinterpretation (insbesondere der Gesprächsanalyse und Gruppendiskussion) sowie der Bild- und Videointerpretation. Dieses Einführungsbuch ist aus dem Erfahrungs-und Gesprächszusammen hang der Lehre erwachsen. Das heißt, es basiert wesentlich auf Manuskripten, die ursprünglich für die Praxis des Seminar-und Lehrbetriebs bestimmt waren. Zugleich ist dieses Buch durch die Erfahrungen der eigenen Forschungs praxis (einschließlich der Praxis der Lehrforschung) geprägt. Diese auf der Grundlage eigener Forschungserfahrung und in der Auseinandersetzung mit ihr allmählich gewachsene empirisch-methodische Verfahrensweise habe ich schlagwortartig als "dokumentarische Methode" bezeichnet. Ich knüpfe damit an die methodologische Tradition der Kultur-und Wis sens soziologie von Kar! Mannheim an, wie dieser sie bereits in den 20er Jahren des nun ausgehenden Jahrhunderts begründet hatte. Zwar hat Harold GarfinkeI, der Begründer der Ethnomethodologie, Anfang der 60er Jahre auf die doku mentarische Methode und mit ihr auf einige wesentliche Elemente der metho dologischen und der erkenntnistheoretischen Arbeiten von Kar! Mannheim aufmerksam gemacht. Dennoch sind jene in Mannheims "Lehre von der Seins verbundenheit des Wissens" bereits in den 20er Jahren ausgearbeiteten metho dologischen Einsichten von seiten der Ethnomethodologie nicht wirklich nutzbar gemacht worden für eine Rekonstruktion der empirischen Forschungs praxis (vgl. Kap. 3.2). Obschon ich vom Standort meiner eigenen forschungspraktisch fundierten methodologischen Position her argumentiere und auf diese Weise das vor liegende Buch seinen roten Faden und übergreifenden Rahmen erhält, versuche ich dennoch, den anderen, in diesem Buch genauer dargelegten und diskutier ten Positionen in deren eigenen, immanenten Ansprüchen gerecht zu werden. In erster Linie sind dies die beiden Verfahrensweisen bzw. Methodologien der objektiven Hermeneutik und des narrativen Interviews.

All psychological processes—like biological and social ones—are dynamic. Phenomena of nature, society, and the human psyche are context bound, constantly changing, and variable. This feature of reality is often not recognized in the social sciences where we operate with averaged data and with homogeneous stereotypes, and consider our consistency to be the cornerstone of rational being. Yet we are all inconsistent in our actions within a day, or from, one day to the next, and much of such inconsistency is of positive value for our survival and development. Our inconsistent behaviors and thoughts may appear chaotic, yet there is generality within this highly variable dynamic. The task of scientific methodologies—qualitative and quantitative—is to find out what that generality is. It is the aim of this handbook to bring into one framework various directions of construction of methodology of the dynamic processes that exist in the social sciences at the beginning of the 21st century. This handbook is set up to bring together pertinent methodological scholarship from all over the world, and equally from the quantitative and qualitative orientations to methodology. In addition to consolidating the pertinent knowledge base for the purposes of its further growth, this book serves the major educational role of bringing practitioners—students, researchers, and professionals interested in applications—the state of the art know-how about how to think about extracting evidence from single cases, and about the formal mathematical-statistical tools to use for these purposes.

Biographical ruptures and their repairs: Cultural transitions in development represents the efforts of bridging theoretical, methodological, and practice oriented issues revolving around the notion of biographical ruptures and their repairs. The aim is to bring novel understandings from cultural psychological perspectives to the debate of what it means to be a developing human being in an ever changing world. Contrary to mainstream psychology ruptures and repairs are here not necessarily understood as a personal experience, which must be overcome through various coping strategies. Rather, ruptures are understood as experiences, which necessarily emerge out of the complex interrelatedness of intra-psychological, inter-personal, and societal processes. Moving along these different levels of analysis, each of the 13 chapters of this book contributes to the general cultural psychological understanding of ruptures from their own particular standpoint. The notion of ruptures and their repairs are discussed from such differing standpoints such as classical developmental psychological theories and challenges to such developmental approaches. They are discussed in relation to racial interpellations using the documentary method and social representations theory. On the object level ruptures are pointed out within popular music videos and from a Ganzheitspsychological approach and others. The current book thus does not only represent a conglomerate of various theoretical, methodological, or practice oriented approaches to ruptures and their repairs, each adding with their own expertise to a better understand of the phenomenon in its whole. It also demonstrated a lively debate between leading specialists and practitioners from different disciplines and countries. Theoretical and methodological issues, as well as ethical and moral ones, are each discussed from their own cultural psychological viewpoint.
