Blackness Without Ethnicity written by L. Sansone and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-08-01 with Social Science categories.

Blackness Without Ethnicity draws on fifteen years of his research in Bahia, Rio Suriname, and Amsterdam. Sansone uses his findings to explore the very different ways that race and ethnicity are constructed in Brazil and the rest of Latin America. He compares these Latin American conceptions of race to dominate notions of race that are defined by a black-white polarity and clearly identifiable ethnicities, formulations he sees as highly influenced by the US and to a lesser degree Western Europe. Sansone argues that understanding more complex and ambiguous notions of culture and identity will expand the international discourse on race and move it away from American dominated notions that are not adequate to describe racial difference in other countries (and also in the countries where the notions originated). He also explores the effects of globalization on constructions of race.

"Based on new archival evidence, this book examines Soviet empire building in Hungary and the American response to it." "The book analyzes why, given all its idealism and power, the U.S. failed even in its minimal aims concerning the states of Eastern Europe. Eventually both the United States and the Soviet Union pursued power politics: the Soviets in a naked form, the U.S. subtly, but both with little regard for the fate of Hungarians."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. "Cuban migration to the United States has altered the face of American politics and demographics. From Welcomed Exiles to Illegal Immigrants, the only scholarly study available of this Cuban migration, analyzes its political dynamics and unique character. In this revised and expanded edition of his 1988 book With Open Arms, Masud-Piloto here extends the discussion with an examination of the Bush and Clinton administrations' responses to recent events in Cuba. Masud-Piloto, an expert on Cuban and Caribbean migrations and a Cuban emigre himself, draws on previously unavailable documents, as well as his first-hand experience, to describe American attempts to destabilize the Castro government by draining Cuba of vitally needed teachers, physicians, and technicians, and to embarrass the revolution by exposing the flight of Cuba's citizens to a "free" country. Masud-Piloto's examination of the Haitian and Central American refugee crises of the past two decades provides a useful comparative perspective." --Book Jacket.
