What can the languages spoken today tell us about the history of their speakers? This question is crucial in insular Southeast Asia and New Guinea, where thousands of languages are spoken, but written historical records and archaeological evidence is yet lacking in most regions. While the region has a long history of contact through trade, marriage exchanges, and cultural-political dominance, detailed linguistic studies of the effects of such contacts remain limited. This volume investigates how loanwords can prove past contact events, taking into consideration ten different regions located in the Philippines, Eastern Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and New Guinea. Each chapter studies borrowing across the borders of language families, and discusses implications for the social history of the speech communities.

A Dictionary of the Kedang Language presents the first extensive published record of an Austronesian language on the remote Eastern Indonesian island of Lembata. A special interest of the dictionary resides in the fact that Kedang lies on the boundary line between Austronesian and Papuan languages in Eastern Indonesia. The Kedang entries are translated first into Indonesian and then into English. For ease of access, finder lists are provided in Indonesian and in English. The Introduction situates the language linguistically and sketches the phonology and morphology, as well as the 'pairing' (dyadic sets) in ritual and everyday usage of items of vocabulary characteristic of Kedang.

upaya pelindungan budaya berupa bahasa dan sastra daerah lewat jalan pendokumentasian merupakan sebuah tugas mulia. Wujud penyelamatan bahasa tidak sebatas pada entitas kata-kata, lebih jauh merupakan upaya penyelamatan sebuah peradaban yang sarat akan nilai-nilai kehidupan. Di tengah hiruk pikuknya teknologi, kita bersyukur karena masih terdapat segelintir orang yang peduli dan meluangkan waktunya untuk menggali, mendata, dan menuangkan ide-ide ke dalam sebuah karya berupa kamus. Sebuah kamus, dibanding dengan karya tulis yang lain berupa buku memiliki kekhasan tersendiri. Bukan karena jumlah halamannya yang banyak dibanding buku-buku yang biasa, tetapi untuk menyusunnya memerlukan ketekunan dan keuletan yang luar biasa. Setiap kata sungguh-sungguh diteliti dan dimaknai untuk kemudian dideskripsikan dalam konteks kebahasaan tertentu. Bahasa Palu’e merupakan salah satu dari 652 bahasa daerah yang telah dipetakan oleh Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa yang terakhir diperbaharui pada tahun 2017. Namun data berupa hasil kajian atau penelitian apalagi kamus tentang bahasa Palu’e masih sangat minim. Hal ini karena selain kurangnya ahli bahasa yang meneliti bahasa Palu’e juga karena kurangnya minat orang-orang yang berkecimpung di dunia linguistik bahkan termasuk penutur bahasa Palu’e sendiri. Kehadiran kamus bahasa Palu’e yang disusun oleh Stefan Danerek jelas merupakan suatu kebanggaan tersendiri bagi perkembangan bahasa-bahasa daerah di Nusa Tenggara Timur. Dengan melimpahnya kekayaan budaya Nusa Tenggara Timur, kamus bahasa Palu’e ibarat oase di tengah kayanya khazanah budaya lokal namun sudah mulai ditinggalkan pemilik budaya itu sendiri. Di sisi lain, tugas luhur ini sangat membantu pekerjaan Kantor Bahasa Nusa Tenggara Timur dalam hal ini Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa yang merupakan delegasi pemerintah dalam upaya penyelamatan nilai-nilai kearifan lokal yang masih banyak tercecer dan terancam punah. Kami turut bangga dan sangat berterima kasih serta memberikan apresiasi setinggitingginya kepada Stefan Danerek. Kita membutuhkan banyak individu seperti beliau yang penuh dedikasi, kerja keras, dan tak kenal lelah dalam berkarya sehingga semakin banyak bahasa daerah yang terselamatkan. Tuhan Yang Maha bijaksana telah mencatat kerja nyata dan sumbangsih beliau bagi kebaikan banyak orang.
