Excerpt from Relativity and Gravitation Chapter II. Is intended so to bring the mind of the reader into contact with certain philosophical prob lems presented to us by our experiences with the external world and our efforts to learn the facts about it, that he may approach the subject of rela tivity with an appreciation of the place it occupies as a phase of human thought and a pillar of the scientific structure. Until the reader is aware of the existence of these problems and the directions taken by the efforts, successful and unsuccessful, to un ravel them, he is not equipped to comprehend the doctrine of relativity at all; he is in much the same case as a child whose education had reached only the primer stage, if asked to read the masterpieces of literature. He lacks not alone the vocabulary, but equally the mental background on which the vocabulary is based. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Theory of General Relativity and Gravitation Some of my readers will miss, perhaps, in this volume the enthusiastic tone which usually permeates the books and pamphlets that have been written on the subject (with a notable exception of Einstein's own writings). Yet the author is the last man to be blind to the admirable boldness and the severe architectonic beauty of Einstein's theory. But it has seemed that beauties of such a kind are rather enhanced than obscured by the adoption of a sober tone and an apparently cold form of presentation. Excerpt from The Mathematical Theory of Relativity The reader is expected to have a general acquaintance with the less technical discussion of the theory given in Space, Time and Gravitation, although there is not often occasion to make direct reference to it. But it is eminently desirable to have a general grasp of the revolution of thought associated with the theory of Relativity before approaching it along the narrow lines of strict mathematical deduction. In the former work we ex plained how the older conceptions of physics had become untenable, and traced the gradual ascent to the ideas which must supplant them. Here our task is to formulate mathematically this new conception of the world and to follow out the consequences to the fullest extent. The present widespread interest in the theory arose from the verification of certain minute deviations from Newtonian laws. To those who are still hesitating and reluctant to leave the old faith, these deviations will remain the chief centre of interest; but for those who have caught the spirit of the new ideas the observational predictions form only a minor part of the subject. It is claimed for the theory that it leads to an understanding of the world of physics clearer and more penetrating than that previously attained, and it has been my aim to develop the theory in a form which throws most light on the origin and significance of the great laws of physics. Excerpt from Gravitation Versus Relativity: A Non-Technical Explanation of the Fundamental Principles of Gravitational Astronomy and a Critical Examination of the Astronomical Evidence Cited as Proof of the Generalized Theory of Relativity It is the main purpose of this book to present to the jury of the thinking world the concrete astronomical evidence cited by Einstein and the relativitists as proof of the Generalized Theory of Relativity, and to sub jcet that evidence to a critical examination. Many a well-built-up case has completely collapsed under a searching examination of the evidence and a cross examination of its chief witnesses. Arthur Stanley Eddington is one of the most influential astrophysicists of the 20th century. Born in Great Britain, he is credited as being a leading teacher of Einstein's theory of relativity in the English world. He is considered a great philosopher of science, and was a boisterous advocate for the popularization of science until his death in 1944. This book, Space, Theory, also titled Space, Time, and Gravitation: An Outline of the General Relativity Theory is one of his most important and well-read books. Originally published in 1920, this book was written at a time when information from Germany would have been limited, and thus many of Einstein's theories had not yet been completely digested by the Western world. The purpose of Space, Theory is to present the theory of relativity to those without a strong scientific or mathematical background. While mathematical equations do make frequent appearances throughout the text, they are complemented by detailed textual explanations and real-world examples. The book is presented in a logical manner. The first chapter discusses the very nature of geometry, and how Euclidean geometry is not sufficient for a discussion of the theory of relativity. One must always consider the dimension of time, Eddington argues. It is this discussion that sets the stage for the remainder of the theories presented in this book. Almost one hundred years after it was written, there are still few better books introducing Einstein's theory of relativity to the layman. Eddington is gifted in taking immensely complex theories and breaking them down to a level that demonstrates their significance in every day life. If you are at all interested in astrophysics, Space, Theory is a must read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Principle of Relativity In the Newtonian description of the modes of motion of bodies however, absolute standards of position and direction are at the outset assumed, not as a philosophic doctrine, but as a means of co-ordinating the phenomena observed as simply as possible. The justification for the assumption lies in the fact that the co-ordination is possible, and the laws so framed con tain within themselves the definition of the terms 'absolute position' and 'direction, ' and they also define, though not uniquely, 'the frame of reference.' A straight line from the point of view of Newtonian dynamics is nothing more than the path of a particle which moves under the influence of no external agencies or again it is the locus of the positions at any instant of a number of particles which were projected in a common direction with different velocities from a given point at some previous moment. Excerpt from The Einstein Theory of Relativity: A Concise Statement Omers was precisely what had been predicted theoretically by Einstein many years since. This striking confirmation has led certain German scientists to assert that no scientific discovery of such importance has been made since Newton's theory of gravitation was promulgated. This suggestion, however, was put aside by Dr. Einstein himself when he was interviewed by a correspond ent of the New York Times at his home in Berlin. To this corre spondent he expressed the difference between his conception and the law of gravitation in the following terms.
