This individual system termed 'interlanguage' is a single and unique one which is yet to conform to the target language norms and evidently incorporates linguistic deficiencies or errors exhibiting the learner's current linguistic level and implying what he/she need acquire to reach a standard of the target language. Hence, the present research has been designed to investigate and examine the relevance of the study of the interlanguage of 21 tertiary level students learning English as a foreign language (EFL). To carry out the study, an experimental group consisting of the 21 students and a control group having another 21 students of the same level have been used. Based on the findings, the researcher makes some linguistic and pedagogic recommendations.

The way language is acquired and learnt has for long been an intriguing issue in social science. This question has attracted researchers from a variety of disciplines and people from different theoretical persuasion and predilections. The process of second language acquisition is yet another of area that is worthy of investigation, given to the agglomerate of the issues that this process engenders to second language learners (L2, henceforth). Of interest to the present study is the way this process jointly interacts with a number of factors, most important of which is the learner’s mother tongue. In this regard, a question of considerable interest is whether or not a learner’s first language affects the process of second language acquisition, in such a way that this interference may either help ease or thwart the developmental path of the learning process. Another interesting query concerns the extent of which formal education reduces or helps circumvent this interference. On this view, the present study sets as its research goals the objectives of providing an investigation of the issue of pragmatic transfer from L1 into the Interlanguage of Moroccan learners of English, namely when these learners make requests in English. More specifically, this study will seek to compare the average frequencies of direct and indirect strategies used by both native Moroccan English as a foreign language learners and native speakers of English. Finally, this study will further attempt to explore whether transfer decreases as the study level increases, namely the case of the Moroccan EFL university learners at the first and the third level of university.

Transcultural Flows of English and Education in Asian Contexts examines issues concerning the potential of English learning and teaching to go beyond the classroom and affect the multicultural realities of Asian societies. Asian societies often carry long histories and traditions that influence beliefs about identities,which are changing in our globalizing world. The authors in this volume explore the synthesis that occurs when culture is shared and re-constructed in different contexts. This volume is the result of the presentations and discussions carried out at the Conference on “Early Foreign Language Learning in Educational Contexts. Bridging Good Practices and Research” organized by the University Ramon Lull, the University of Bari and LEND (Lingua e Nuova Didattica) in March 2010. At the Conference, both teachers and researchers met to examine recent language teaching theories and practices from a transnational and intercultural perspective, on the one hand, and on the other, to fill the gap in the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in schools and to pave the way for a wider platform of discussion between School and University. Studies on discourse and language learning originated in the field of general education and they focused on first language learning environments. However, since 1980s research on discourse and language learning broadened the scope of investigation to respond to second and foreign language environments. Recently, the emergence of new language learning contexts such as computer mediated communication, multilingual settings or content and language integrated contexts requires further research that focuses on discourse and language learning. From this perspective, the present volume aims to broaden the scope of investigation in foreign language contexts by exploring discourse patterns in the classroom and examining the impact of factors such as gender, explicitness of feedback or L1 use on language learning through discourse. With that aim in mind, this volume will bring together research that investigates discourse in various instructional settings, namely those of primary, secondary and university L2 learning environments, content and language integrated contexts and other new language learning settings.
