Seit Anfang der 1990er-Jahre gelangt das Konzept in der internationalen Diskussion immer stärker in den Vordergrund. Ursache dafür ist unter anderem die bildungspolitische Fokussierung verschiedener Organisationen auf das Projekt des „Lebenslangen“ oder auch „Lebensbegleitenden Lernens“. Diese Theorie fordert ein Weiterlernen der Menschen über den gesamten Lebensweg hinweg. Informelles Lernen wird weitreichend als Schlüssel oder Lösungsansatz verstanden, das Vorhaben des Lebenslangen Lernens umzusetzen, denn nach weitgehend konformer Expertenmeinung findet nicht mehr als 30% des menschlichen Lernens formal statt. Dies bedeutet, dass 70% der Lernprozesse informell erfolgen. Da informelles Lernen bereits von jedem Menschen ausgeübt wird, soll dieses existierende Lebenslange informelle Lernen aller verstärkt wahr- und ernstgenommen, anerkannt, unterstützt, weiterentwickelt und ergänzt werden. Vor allem seitens der Wirtschaft wird das Konzept des Lebenslangen Lernens unterstützt. Unternehmen sehen durch ständige berufliche Weiterbildung den Vorteil von qualifizierten Arbeitskräften, die sich veränderten Anforderungen und Technologien anpassen und so die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit steigern. Internationale Vereinigungen wie die EU oder Organisationen wie die OECD betonen auch den Nutzen von Weiterbildung für die gesamte Bevölkerung und für Arbeitnehmer aus persönlichem Interesse. Informelles Lernen wird dabei als Antwort auf den Weiterbildungsbedarf der Angestellten gesehen. In dieser Arbeit soll sich daher mit dem Konzept des informellen Lernens auseinandergesetzt werden. Dies soll anhand folgender Fragestellung geschehen: Welche Relevanz hat das Konzept des informellen Lernens für die berufliche Weiterbildung aus Sicht der Arbeitnehmer? Es soll geprüft werden, ob informelles Lernen in der beruflichen Weiterbildung wirklich eine Bedeutsamkeit für die Zielerreichung der Arbeitnehmer besitzt, also ob neben dem ökonomischen Ziel der Angestelltenqualifizierung auch arbeitnehmerspezifische Ziele erreicht werden können.
