Aquinas At Prayer written by Paul Murray OP and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-15 with Religion categories.

Aquinas at Prayer draws attention to important aspects of Aquinas's life and work which have been all too often overlooked or forgotten. Today Aquinas is almost exclusively regarded as an outstanding scholastic philosopher and theologian. But what is little known is that Aquinas was, first and last, a teacher of the Bible - a Master of the Sacred Page. Moreover there is a distinctly mystical character to his theology. And, as a writer, he was not only a poet but, arguably, the greatest Latin poet of the Middle Ages. The primary focus of this most engaging new book is to explore the question of Aquinas's own practice of prayer and his teaching on prayer in his commentaries on the Psalms and St Paul. The book is strengthened by quotations from Aquinas in fresh translations.

The Cathars written by Malcolm Barber and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-17 with History categories.

The Cathars are one of the most famous heretical movements of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. They infiltrated the highest ranks of society and posed a major threat not only to the Catholic Church but also to secular authorities as well. The movement was finally smashed by the crusade and the inquisitional proceedings that followed. This new study is the first comprehensive history of the Cathars. It addresses major topics in medieval history including heresy, orthodoxy and the Crusades as well as providing a history of the social and political history of Languedoc and the rise of the Capetian dynasty. A fascinating study of the development of radical religious belief and its violent suppression.

The discovery of the New World raised many questions for early modern scientists: What did these lands contain? Where did they lie in relation to Europe? Who lived there, and what were their inhabitants like? Imperial expansion necessitated changes in the way scientific knowledge was gathered, and Spanish cosmographers in particular were charged with turning their observations of the New World into a body of knowledge that could be used for governing the largest empire the world had ever known. As María M. Portuondo here shows, this cosmographic knowledge had considerable strategic, defensive, and monetary value that royal scientists were charged with safeguarding from foreign and internal enemies. Cosmography was thus a secret science, but despite the limited dissemination of this body of knowledge, royal cosmographers applied alternative epistemologies and new methodologies that changed the discipline, and, in the process, how Europeans understood the natural world.

This book consists of a series of papers that look at three different aspects of the landscape as seen in dictionaries from across Europe. Multilingual diachronic case studies into lexicographical descriptions of flora, landscape features and colours concentrate on three supposedly simple words: daisies (Bellis perenis L.), hills and the colour red. The work is part of the ongoing LandLex initiative, originally developed as part of the COST ENeL - European Network for e-Lexicography - action. The group brings together researchers in lexicography and lexicology from across Europe and is dedicated to studying multilingual and diachronic issues in language. It aims to valorise the wealth of European language diversity as found in dictionaries by developing and testing new digital annotation tools and a historical morphological dictionary prototype. This second edition of Catherine J. Allen's distinctive ethnography of the Quechua-speaking people of the Andes brings their story into the present. She has added an extensive afterword based on her visits to Sonqo in 1995 and 2000 and has updated and revised parts of the original text. The book focuses on the very real problem of cultural continuity in a changing world, and Allen finds that the hold life has in 2002 is not the same as it was in 1985.

The overutilization of fish stocks, the overcapitalization of fisheries, the removal of associated benefits to society and growing concern over the conservation of marine biodiversity have resulted in a line of fisheries research that is multidisciplinary, dynamic and precautionary in approach. All the biological, ecological and economic factors need to be analysed if the forces regulating the dynamics of a fishery are to be appraised. This publication looks at the assumptions underlying the optimal allocation of renewable natural resources; lists the bioeconomic points of reference resulting from analysis of fisheries is supposed conditions of equilibrium; analysis bioeconomic models according to ecological interdependence factors (such as competition and predation) and technological factors (such as competition between fleets with different fishing capacity); offers a time-series analysis of fisheries and estimates the level of optimal effort; proposes mathematical models applied to bioeconomic analysis to support fisheries management plans; refutes the assumption of uniform resource distribution, incorporating a spatial dimension in fisheries dynamics analysis; and expounds basic elements of decision-making theory and criteria that reflect different attitudes to risk aversion in fisheries management. Contents: Chapter 1: Inherent Characteristics of Fish Stocks, (1) Optimal Allocation of Renewable Resources: Basic Assumptions, (2) The Failure in the Optimal Allocation of Fishery Resources, (3) Fisheries Management Plans, (4) A Closing Comment, Chapter 2: Bioeconomic Models, (1) The Gordon-Schaefer Model, (2) Fleet Dynamics: A Distributed-Delay Smith s Model, (3) Yield-Mortality Models: A Bioeconomic Approach, (4) Age-Structured Bioeconomic Models, (5) Intertemporal Fisheries Analysis, Chaper 3: Ecological and Technological Interdependencies, (1) Technological Interdependencies: Heterogenous Fishing Effort, (2) Technologically Interdependent Fisheries: Two Fleets, (3) Technological Interdependencies: Sequential Fisheries, (4) Bioeconomics of Ecologically Interdependent Stocks, (5) Techno-Ecological Interdependencies, (6) Multispecies Fisheries and Experimental Management, Chapter 4: The System Science Approach in Fisheries Bioeconomics, (1) The System Simulation Approach, (2) A Numerical Example, Chapter 5: Management, (1) State Intervention Criteria, (2) Management Strategies, (3) Multiple Criteria Optimization Approach for Fisheries Management, Chapter 6: Spatial Bioeconomic Models, (1) Spatial Allocation of Fishing Intensite, (2) Short-Run Spatial Dynamics: ALLOC Model, (3) Short and Long-Run Geographic Bioeconomic Dynamics: CHART Model, (4) A Spatial Bioeconomic Model for Sedentary Fisheries: The Yellow Clam Mesodesma mactroides of Uruguay, a Study Case, Chapter 7: Risk and Uncertainty: A Precautionary Approach, (1) Precautionary Approach to Fisheries Management, (2) Sources of Uncertainty in Fisheries, (3) Management Decisions without Mathematical Probabilities, (4) Management Decisions with Mathematical Probabilities, (5) Estimation of Uncertainty in Model Parameters.

Romantic Motives explores a topic that has been underemphasized in the historiography of anthropology. Tracking the Romantic strains in the the writings of Rousseau, Herder, Cushing, Sapir, Benedict, Redfield, Mead, Levi-Strauss, and others, these essays show Romanticism as a permanent and recurrent tendency within the anthropological tradition."
