What is the place of religion in modern political systems? This volume addresses that question by focusing on ten countries across several geographic areas: Western and East-Central Europe, North America, the Middle East and South Asia. These countries are comparable in the sense that they are committed to constitutional rule, have embraced a more or less secular culture, and have formal guarantees of freedom of religion. Yet in all the cases examined here religion impinges on the political system in the form of legal establishment, semi-legitimation, subvention, and/or selective institutional arrangements and its role is reflected in cultural norms, electoral behaviour and public policies. The relationship between religion and politics comes in many varieties in differing countries, yet all are faced with three major challenges: modernity, democracy and the increasingly multi-ethnic and multi-religious nature of their societies.

An examination of the Spanish Church in transition over recent decades, as it responded to far-reaching societal change. Having disengaged from Francoism, it embraced democracy but found itself somewhat at odds with various aspects of the modernisation of Spain, the ongoing process of secularisation and the 'supermarket' approach to doctrine of its own membership. La España contemporánea vivió según su propia cronología, y su propio dramatismo, los cambios y las crisis de las sociedades occidentales. De hecho, las relaciones entre la Iglesia y el Estado orientaron, sin duda mucho más que en otros países, su historia. La hegemonía política y cultural de la España moderna, reivindicada por la derecha, estribaba en el catolicismo. Toda cuestión política tuvo en España un trasfondo religioso puesto que la religión abarcaba todas las esferas de la sociedad y el Estado dependía de la Iglesia. Pero la sacralización por la derecha autoritaria de un pasado glorioso y de la organización estamental del Antiguo Régimen, confundidos con el catolicismo triunfante, contribuyó a forjar la imagen de un país enfrentado con la modernidad y que tenía dificultades para adaptarse a las exigencias del liberalismo económico y político. Lo que estuvo en juego en la lenta evolución de este fenómeno religioso fue la interpretación de la modernización y de la democratización de España. La democracia, que pasó de ser un valor reivindicado por una minoría social a una exigencia compartida por amplios sectores, implicaba otra relación con una Iglesia que aceptara la cultura secular y renunciara a su concepción totalizadora de la sociedad.

Lo que este estudio muestra es fruto de un contacto directo, a través de cuestionarios, con lo que los españoles piensan, con lo que ellos dicen que está bien o que está mal. No se trata, pues, de lo que ellos hacen ni si lo que hacen se corresponde con lo que dicen. Se trata de establecer en qué medida su percepción moral, sus juicios sobre lo que está bien o lo que está mal, depende de cómo son y de las creencias y actitudes que tienen. El objetivo es poder llegar a determinar si hay tendencias generales que puedan detectarse cuando se cumplen ciertos supuestos que son la base de la psicología del desarrollo moral, y sirven a su vez para conseguir objetivos educativos. Para ello, se hace un seguimiento de factores asociados a la permisividad moral: el contexto social, la edad, el sexo y la religiosidad de los sujetos, en dos etapas muy relevantes para España: el posconcilio Vaticano II y la transición a la democracia. En ese momento de cambio profundo, se trata de saber qué prácticas entienden aceptables y cuales rechazables, cuáles admitidas y cuáles prohibidas. Por su actualidad, se destacan tres puntos: Primero, los jóvenes españoles consideran la violencia como la conducta menos permitida. Segundo, ¿por qué los jóvenes de 21-24 años son más permisivos con la violencia doméstica que sus compañeros más jóvenes de 18-20 años y de 15-17 años? Tercero, ¿por qué todos los grupos aquí encuestados justifican que una mujer decida tener un hijo sin pareja estable?
