Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2.3 (B), University of Tubingen (New Philology Faculty), course: Hauptseminar: Restoration Literature, language: English, abstract: Milton is one of the greatest poets of the English language. His career as a poet was marked by private tragedies and public controversies. Samson Agonistes is a piece of work, which was composed by Milton not as a pure didactic exercise but also as extended personal meditation. It seems to be one of his attempts to justify the ways of God to himself and thereby establish a vision of Christian heroism that answers the fears and misgivings of his own heart and mind. Samson Agonistes also shows Milton′s struggle with politics after the defeat of the Good Old Cause in which he supported strongly. The events and emotions surrounding his composition Samson Agonistes had a great influence on this work. Nobody knows exactly when Samson Agonistes was written but it is assumed that it was in a time where his own resurrection and salvation had begun and that he had taken Samson as a role model less numinous than Christ to express his inner feelings. Samson Agonistes is therefor more interesting as a religious, political and autobiographical play than as the classical, Greek tragedy or as the Christian comedy, as so many people have judged it. In this term paper I will work out how much politics and religion have influenced Samson Agonistes and whether there are bibliographical correspondences between Milton and Samson. [...]

In analyzing how Milton reads and appropriates different biblical texts to give shape to his republican vision, this book also assesses his significance to the development of early modern English political thought, his conception of the English nation, and finally, his response to pressures exerted by a secular modernity grounded on international commercial activities."--Jacket.

John Milton (9th December 1608 – 8th November 1674) was an English poet. He is best known for his epic poem ‘Paradise Lost’. ‘Paradise Lost’ is widely considered as one of the greatest works of literature. He is known for ‘Aeropagitica’ which is written in condemnation of pre-publication censorship and is among history’s most influential and impassioned defence of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Moreover, Milton was the first modern writer to employ unrhythmed verse outside of the theatre. He is highly appreciated by William Hayley. He had considered Milton the ‘greatest English author’. Other renowned poets such as William Blake, William Wordsworth, and Thomas Hardy revered John Milton. ‘Paradise Lost’ has been considered as Milton’s masterpiece, with that his reputation was considered as one of the greatest English poets of his time. The poem relates with the biblical story of the fall of Man, the temptation of Adam & Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. So the theme of the book initiated with Adam and Eve’s disobedience and fall from grace. Nicely elaborates God’s plan for humankind. It seems very interesting that Satan and the rebel angel are chained to a lake of fire in Hell. But somehow they get freed themselves and fly to land and they construct one Pandemonium, a meeting place (People are excited too much). And they consider this as their meeting place. Now the rebel angels are very much anxious to fight against the Gods. Now those rebel angels have become devils. How exactly they all start a war against the Gods? Who meet Satan at the entry level of heaven? In heaven, God tells the council of angels about Satan’s intention. Even Satan tries to involve Adam & Eve. When God comes to know about the trick of Satan, He immediately sends someone to make them aware and to save from Satan’s game. Satan takes the form of Serpent after a close study on the animals of Paradise. The story narrates all about the future scenario of Earth after the disobedience of Adam & Eve. Very interesting and it is one of the classic literature of its class. A must read book that reveals such a unique and interesting theme.

Reviving Liberty written by Joan S. Bennett and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Milton's Great Poems--Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes--are here examined in the light of his lifelong commitment to the English revolutionary cause. The poems, Joan Bennett shows, reflect the issues Milton had dealt with in theological and public policy debate, foreign diplomacy, and propaganda; moreover, they work innovatively with these issues, reaching in epic and tragedy answers that his pamphlets and tracts of the past twenty years had only partially achieved. The central issue is the nature and possibility of human freedom, or "Christian liberty." Related questions are the nature of human rationality, the meaning of law, of history, of individuality, of society, and--everywhere--the problem of evil. The book offers a revisionist position in the history of ideas, arguing that Renaissance Christian humanism in England descended not from Tudor to Stuart Anglicanism but from Tudor Anglicanism to revolutionary Puritanism. Close readings are offered of texts by Richard Hooker, Milton, and a range of writers before and during the revolutionary period. Not only theological and political positions but also political actions taken by the authors are compared. Milton's poems are studied in the light of these analyses. The concept of "radical Christian humanism" moves current Milton criticism beyond the competing conceptions of Milton as the poet of democratic liberalism and the prophet of revolutionary absolutism. Milton's radical Christian humanism was built upon pre-modern conceptions and experiences of reason that are not alien to our time. It stemmed from, and resulted in, a religious commitment to political process which his poems embody and illuminate.

On July 14th, 1790, a key figure in the French Revolution honoured Milton as a founding father of the French republic. In the light of this connection, it was appropriate that the 8th International Milton Symposium (7-11 June 2005) was held in Grenoble, cradle of the French Revolution. But the connection of Milton and Rights takes us well beyond the specific link with France, and the fascinating selection of essays assembled in this volume, many by leading Milton scholars, addresses the question in the poetry as well as the prose. Milton's fervent but changing attitude to liberties is debated from various points of view, so that the volume contains essays on topics ranging from the musical adaptations of Samson Agonistes to its angrily argued parallel with contemporary terrorism, from air pollution in Paradise Lost to Milton's supposed Puritanism and putative parallels with a French pornographer.

Bringing together literary criticism, historical bibliography, and religious, political, and print history, this volume offers a definitive scholarly edition of John Milton's Paradise Regain'd and Samson Agonistes. The scrupulously-edited text is based on extensive collation of the 1671 and 1680 volumes. Drawing on new archival sources and up-to-date historiography, a detailed Introduction sets out the cultural, religious, and political contexts of 1670-71, including continuing opposition to the Restoration regime and the major contribution made to that opposition by publishers and print. While the meanings of the 1671 poems have been much discussed and debated, print and publishing history has been little addressed in teaching editions or scholarship. New archival materials on Milton's publisher, John Starkey, and his printer, John Macock, open up the radical print networks in which Milton's poems were produced, published, and circulated. The Textual Introduction and Headnote also provide a thorough discussion of the contributions of the printing house to the text. Reconstruction of the octavo sheets used in printing the text shows that multiple compositors worked on the text and thus helps to explain variant spelling and address longstanding issues of dating. A discussion of Milton's bold transformation of classical epic and tragedy provides literary historical context. This edition also breaks new ground by including materials on early owners and readers, who actively shaped the texts with corrections, annotations, and references to biblical and classical sources. As an aid for students and scholars alike, Textual Commentary provides precise OED word definitions, identifies biblical, classical, historical, and geographical references, and explains Latin, Greek, and Hebrew usages. This volume will be of interest to scholars of Milton, of Renaissance literature, of print and publishing history, of history of the book, and of early modern cultural, political, and religious history.
