English summary: Can one be religiously educated without participating in religious practice? What effectively distinguishes an educated from an uneducated, a religious from a non-religious person? And, in the face of apparently never-ending conflicts between denominations and religions, would it not be better if there were no denominations and religions at all? David Kabisch relates these questions to the issue of religious instruction which is today attended not only by children and young people of different denominations and religions, but also by students with no confession. Following an empirical and systematic introduction, the didactic section focuses on sample exercises suitable for classes that include non-confessional students, but also for ecumenical and interreligious learning. The issue of the having no confession can therefore also be illuminating for these two aspects of learning within religious education that is open to pluralism. At the same time however, their own existential experience exhibits reflexive moments that are of a religious nature. Here lies a potential that could make a contribution to learning processes in religious education. This study develops criteria of religious hermeneutics for the observation of these experiences and therewith exercises the orientation by the subject which has been demanded by Schleiermacher in the past. The analysis of the use of metaphors in individual symbolizations as well as the description of teaching processes and their religious-hermeneutic reflections result in suggestions for didactic approaches in religious education within a post-socialist environment.

This book provides a conceptually and empirically rich introduction to religious indifference on the basis of original anthropological, historical and sociological research. Religious indifference is a central category for understanding contemporary societies, and a controversial one. For some scholars, a growing religious indifference indicates a dramatic decline in religiosity and epitomizes the endpoint of secularization processes. Others view it as an indicator of moral apathy and philosophical nihilism, whilst yet others see it as paving the way for new forms of political tolerance and solidarity. This volume describes and analyses the symbolic power of religious indifference and the conceptual contestations surrounding it. Detailed case studies cover anthropological and qualitative data from the UK, Germany, Estonia, the USA, Canada, and India analyse large quantitative data sets, and provide philosophical-literary inquiries into the phenomenon. They highlight how, for different actors and agendas, religious indifference can constitute an objective or a challenge.
