Excerpt from The Religious System of China, Vol. 3: Its Ancient Forms, Evolution, History and Present Aspect Manners, Customs and Social Institutions Connected Therewith; Book I., Disposal of the Dead, Part III, the Grave (Second Half) The simple conclusion is, that family graves must have been of common prevalence in the ancient Chinese Empire. The custom of living together in clans, each composed of the descendants of one family, greatly favoured this state of things, naturally turning the burial ground of each settlement or village into one large family grave-yard. Excerpt from The Religion of the Chinese A place as a world-religion must, without hesi tation, be assigned to it on account of the vast number of its adherents. It has extended the circle of its influence far beyond the boundaries of the empire proper, and has gained access, together with Chinese culture generally, into Korea, Japan, Manchuria, and Turkestan, as well as into Indo China, though, of course, in modified forms. Hence a proper understanding of the religions of East Asia in general requires in the first place an under standing of the religion of China. Excerpt from Religions of Ancient China The problem of the universe has never offered the slightest difficulty to Chinese philosophers. Before the beginning of all things, there was Nothing. In the lapse of ages Nothing coalesced into Unity, the Great Monad. After more ages, the Great Monad separated into Duality, the Male and Female Principles in nature; and then, by a process of biogenesis, the visible universe was produced. An addition, however, to this simple system had to be made, in deference to, and on a plane with, the intelligence of the masses. According to this, the Male and Female Principles were each subdivided into Greater and Lesser, and then from the interaction of these four agencies a being, named P'an Ku, came into existence. Excerpt from Hanlin Papers: Second Series, Essays on the History, Philosophy, and Religion of the Chinese A Book like this, consisting of a series of Papers, - the slow growth of years, - possesses one conspicuous advantage over a work more hastily written. It is not made to order; but each Essay springs from the spontaneous inclination of the author, and gives the results of his special studies. The Papers in this volume fall under the general heads of History, Philosophy, and Religion. Some of the topics, such as International Law and Diplomacy in ancient China, are so new that they have never before been treated by any writer, native or foreign. One or two, however, resemble more or less subjects treated in the First Series but they will in all cases be found to be characterized by new views or ampler treatment. Excerpt from The Religious System of China, Vol. 2: Its Ancient Forms, Evolution, History and Present Aspect, Manners, Custom and Social Institutions Connected Therewith Burial underneath a layer of earth, in coffins, is the usual way in which the Chinese dispose of their dead throughout their Empire. Other methods, to be reviewed in the last chapter of this Volume, are exceptional. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Religious System of China, Its Ancient Forms, Evolution, History and Present Aspect, Manners, Customs and Social Institutions Connected Therewith, Vol. 5 It is clear that both among men and spectres there may be such anti-natural actions which are sie or yin. They are all detrimental to the good Of the world, destroy the prosperity and peace which are the highest good Of man, and, as a consequence, all good, beneficial government; they may thus endanger the world andthe Throne. If they proceed from men, they ought to be combated by everybody, and eradicated; it is the natural duty of right-minded, orthodox rulers and statesmen to persecute such heresies, and even the thoughts and sayings which produce them, the more so as they may be detrimental to virtue and morality, without which humanity cannot possibly prosper, nor durably exist. And when such actions proceed from spirits, a defensive war should be waged against them by man, with or without the help of his good spirits and gods; they should be combated, repulsed, driven away and exorcised, if possible annihilated, by artful expedients. Man in the course Of time has contrived quite an abundance Of these; properly speaking that warfare never pauses, and is carried on quite systematically every day throughout the empire. We shall have to devote the fourth Part of this Book to its description. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Shu King: Or the Chinese Historical Classic, Being an Authentic Record of the Religion, Philosophy, Customs and Government of the Chinese From the Earliest Times On this point there can be little doubt whatsoever. For although the book appears to bear marks of derange ment, there can be no question as to the authenticity of the record; and whether it be identical with the work ascribed to Confucius, or a work otherwise derived by compilation, it is certainly based upon authentic information, and constitutes the most ancient historical writing which exists in China.
