Este primeiro Dicionário da Religiosidade Popular tem todas as características de um ‘abecedário’, no seu sentido humanista. Desde o fim da Idade Média, o Humanismo se distingue pela maneira aberta e tolerante de pesquisar, pensar e explicar. Durante quarenta anos, o autor reuniu e organizou em verbetes uma grande variedade de informações sobre a vida e a experiência religiosa do povo brasileiro. Buscou a coerência de suas culturas e não tanto a lógica total e racionalista. Tanto recorreu às ciências e às artes, quanto procurou estar presente lá onde as coisas acontecem. Pesquisou também arquivos, no Brasil e em Portugal. Na análise da relação entre cultura e religião, alguns temas são constantes; as raízes indígenas; a memória da escravidão e da mãe África; a forte influência lusa; a brasilidade mestiça; a dialética entre o oficial e o popular, hoje e no passado; migração e urbanização; a situação socioeconômica; a mídia; a união na diversidade; a comunidade de base; instituições religiosas e a fé viva do povo. Assim, à diferença de outros, este não é um dicionário de folclore no sentido que não enfoca apenas o tradicional, mas a múltipla experiência religiosa do povo brasileiro no passado e no presente. Foi privilegiada a fala do povo através dos seus representantes; o mestre da folia, a rezadeira, o capitão do congado, a mãe de santo, o cordelista e tantos outros. Suas histórias, depoimentos, provérbios, cantos e orações estão impressos em itálico, destacando assim a parte mais importante do Dicionário. Na religiosidade popular, aparecem assuntos tais como a espinhela caída, simpatias para curar, transe, visagens, que não cabem nas teorias oficiais e, neste Dicionário, há uma preocupação essencial; compreendê-los, sem recorrer a explicações como as da parapsicologia. O povo do Jequitinhonha, querendo entender a vida ou resolver algum problema urgente, dizia ao autor - 'morei no assunto' ou 'pus aquilo no sentido'. Caro leitor, é isso mesmo, a verdade é vivida, compartida e concreta e não começa com teorias prontas. Grande é a riqueza cultural e religiosa dos pobres.
