[Abstract] The purpose of this Heuristic research study was to thoroughly explore the question, "What is The Experience of Being a Reluctant Father?" A complete definition of my research question was done to enhance the understanding of the study. My literature review involved an overview of pertinent books on the subject of fathering. The Heuristic Model clearly defined each of the methods and procedures that I used in writing this study. The members of my study, my co-researchers, were asked to relate their perspective of the experience. As a co-researcher, I also contributed to the study my own subjective thought and feelings of my experience. From the wealth of information that I collected, seven major themes were prevalent: 1. Confusion and fear; 2. Anger; 3. Life style change; 4. Selfishness; 5. Self doubt; 6. Impact of one's own father; 7. Glory of fatherhood. The findings show that being a reluctant father can be a frightening experience. The findings show that there is a correlation between what a father knows of fatherhood from his past and present experience with his own father. That experience leads into the role of becoming a happy father. The findings of this study can be utilized by expectant fathers, adults who were reluctant parents, and by psychotherapists.
