Health practitioners working in gray zones, or between official and unofficial medicines, played a fundamental role in shaping Latin America from the colonial period onward. The Gray Zones of Medicine offers a human, relatable, complex examination of the history of health and healing in Latin America across five centuries. Este texto estudia la relación entre el saber médico y el poder judicial en Antioquia a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, y muestra cómo el saber médico empezó a constituirse en una parte fundamental de la toma de decisiones judiciales. A la par, la obra relata el surgimiento de la medicina legal en Antioquia, y lo compara con el que se llevó a cabo en Cundinamarca. Esta especialidad permitió a los médicos extender sus experticias en los procesos criminales y desplazar progresivamente el saber de los peritos sin diploma, es decir, de los peritos legos. Igualmente, se narra la tensión entre los médicos y quienes ejercían las distintas "artes de curar", y el papel de la Academia de Medicina de Medellín en dicha disputa. Es una obra de investigación historica escrita de forma sencilla y amena que representa un aporte a la bibliografía sobre historia de la medicina e historia del derecho.
