This disrupted their lives and caused untold psychological and physical scars, not only to themselves, but to their families and their Life Saving family.During these difficult years, the member's of the Club kept in contact with the help of Club Secretary William A Spunner, affectionately known to all as 'Uncle Bill', the nominal head of their unoffical family.There have been many books written about the importance of receiving letters from those who served overseas. This fact is clearly supported by how happy the members were to receive their letters. These 750 letters, written by Serving Club members, were retyped into Newsletters by Uncle Bill, and sent around the world to every member. These letters reveal how being a member of the Mentone Life Saving Club was like being a member of a very large family.These letters gave voice to the brave members far away from their families, and kept them in touch with life back home. The recurring theme was a desire to not be forgotten, to be remembered as life went on back at home. These letters, now collected together, allow us to fulfill their wish to "remember me, remember us".
