Rockaway Beach, Long Island - New York: This issue contains 250 color and black and white images of many sections of the Rockaway Peninsula -- but this is much more than just a picture book. The author presents detailed captions which provide an educational background on important historical topics pertaining to areas of interest especially regarding the continuing dilemma of beach erosion. Also included in this volume are photo essays featuring the Great Iron Pier of Rockaway Beach: a featured tribute to some of the (former) local fire houses; the Far Rockaway railway station (Depot Square) and why and how it developed into a shopping plaza during the second half of the 20th Century as well as the ultimate demise of that underutilized commercial property; the famous Elstone Hotel and grounds in the Bayswater section of Far Rockaway; the Roche's development on South Street in lower Far Rockaway; the enormous popularity of the many tent cities before they were eclipsed by summer rental bungalows; the rise and fall of Hog Island -- "once upon a time you saw it - now you don't"; some final images of Rockaway's Playland recorded almost immediately before the arrival of the demolition crews; and these are only a few of the exciting discoveries unearthed and revealed between the covers of this book. This work also includes the full report issued on March 20th, 1918 as prepared and presented by the Chief Engineer of The New York City Board of Estimate and Apportionment regarding the diminishing beaches of the Rockaway Peninsula. So, be prepared to be entertained and informed by this author's latest release in his continuing salute to the history of the Rockaways.

The inspirational story of one woman learning to surf and creating a new life in gritty, eccentric Rockaway Beach Unmoored by a failed marriage and disconnected from her high-octane life in the city, Diane Cardwell finds herself staring at a small group of surfers coasting through mellow waves toward shore--and senses something shift. Rockawayis the riveting, joyful story of one woman's reinvention--beginning with Cardwell taking the A Train to Rockaway, a neglected spit of land dangling off New York City into the Atlantic Ocean. She finds a teacher, buys a tiny bungalow, and throws her not-overly-athletic self headlong into learning the inner workings and rhythms of waves and the muscle development and coordination needed to ride them. As Cardwell begins to find her balance in the water and out, superstorm Sandy hits, sending her into the maelstrom in search of safer ground. In the aftermath, the community comes together and rebuilds, rekindling its bacchanalian spirit as a historic surfing community, one with its own quirky codes and surf culture. And Cardwell's surfing takes off as she finds a true home among her fellow passionate longboarders at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, living out "the most joyful path through life." Rockawayis a stirring story of inner salvation sought through a challenging physical pursuit--and of learning to accept the idea of a complete reset, no matter when in life it comes.

Chronicling the story of New York's beloved Rockaway Beach community and the efforts to recapture the magical success from an earlier era. The American frontier did not just consist of a prairie--it also included marshes and windswept sand dunes. When the earliest settlers arrived at Rockaway Beach on steamships in the mid-1800s, it was a narrow strip of land packed with ponds and covered with dunes. Within 30 years, the community had grown into a wildly popular resort served by a thriving rail line. Amusement parks, hotels, taverns, and dance halls abounded, as did bungalow courts and open-air tent colonies. In the 1960s, the area was disrupted by urban development efforts and transportation infrastructure had declined. Today, Rockaway Beach is being rediscovered by a new generation of visitors and entrepreneurs as longtime residents work simultaneously to reinvigorate it.

Richard Grayson has been keeping a daily diary compulsively since the summer of 1969, when he was an 18-year-old agoraphobic about to venture out into the world - or at least the world around him in Brooklyn. His diary, approximately 600 words a day without missing a day since August 1, 1969, now totals over 9 million words, rivaling the longest diaries ever written. But Grayson is not merely an eccentric with graphomania. His nonfiction has appeared in PEOPLE, THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE ORLANDO SENTINEL, THE SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC, THE NEW YORK POST and numerous other periodicals. Excerpts from his diaries have appeared online at McSWEENEY'S and THOUGHT CATALOG. ROLLING STONE called Grayson's first short story collection, WITH HITLER IN NEW YORK, published in 1979, "where avant-garde fiction goes when it becomes stand-up comedy," and NEWSDAY said, "The reader is dazzled by the swift, witty goings-on." BEACH CHANNEL DRIVE covers the first half of 1980, when Grayson is struggling n New York.

“How tragic that this book--set in a Queens, New York, beach town that in real life was devastated by Sandy--has a new relevance. Sarah is a California painter who’s come east for a retreat she hopes will revive her artistic passion. It’s a sheer joy to stay in the company of Ison’s voice. There’s an unlikely relationship at the center, the kind of encounter that could happen only in the summertime suspension of ‘ordinary’ life.” --Karen Russell, O Magazine Rockaway Beach, 2001. Sarah, a painter from southern California, retreats to this eccentric, eclectic beach town in the far reaches of Queens with the hopes of rediscovering her passion for painting. Sarah has the opportunity for a real gallery showing if only she can create some new and interesting work. There, near the beach, she hopes to escape a life caught in the stasis of caregiving for her elderly parents and working at an art supply store to unleash the artist within. One summer, a room filled with empty canvasses, nothing but possibility. There she meets Marty, an older musician from a once-popular band whose harmonies still infuse the summertime music festivals. His strict adherence to his music and to his Jewish faith will provoke unexpected feelings in Sarah and influence both her time there and her painting. Rockaway is a time capsule love letter to a quirky, singular town, in a time before an entire community was brought to its knees in the events about to occur in September 2001, and to an entire town that faced tragedy again when it was summarily devastated eleven years later by Hurricane Sandy.

Having grandchildren late in life means that they will never really get to know you. This was the case for me and for my children. I never knew my grandparents as they lived and died in Ireland before I had a chance to go there. I might have gone over in 1950 and seen my maternal grandfather Patrick Quinn. He was the only grandparent living when it was possible, after the war, to visit Ireland. Regretfully, I didnt go when I had the chance, and he died in 1951.
