In this study, Robert B. Foster explores the intersection between the interpretation of Scripture and the construction of communal identities. He argues that in Rom 9, Paul applies prophetic texts from Malachi, Hosea, and Isaiah to the story of Abraham's children in Genesis. These interpretive maneuvers enable Paul to extrapolate from the patriarchal narratives a specific construal of election: it is the ironic privilege of being simultaneously God's chosen and rejected people. This understanding of election he in turn applies to Gentile Christ-followers, the remnant, and all Israel in order to build for them an all-encompassing yet differentiated Abrahamic identity for the messianic age.

In the Gospel of John, the character of Jesus repeatedly comes into conflict with a group pejoratively designated as 'the Jews'. In chapter 8 of the Gospel this conflict could be said to reach a head, with Jesus labeling the Jews as children 'of the devil' (8:44) - a verse often cited as epitomizing early Christian anti-Judaism. Using methods derived from modern and post-modern literary criticism Ruth Sheridan examines textual allusions to the biblical figures of Cain and Abraham in John 8:1-59. She pays particular attention to how these allusions give shape to the Gospel's alleged and infamous anti-Judaism (exemplified in John 8:44). Moreover, the book uniquely studies the subsequent reception in the Patristic and Rabbinic literature, not only of John 8, but also of the figures of Cain and Abraham. It shows how these figures are linked in Christian and Jewish imagination in the formative centuries in which the two religions came into definition.

Throughout the Old Testament, we read the history of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the sons of promise. They would inherit land the LORD showed Abram/Abraham. At that time, their land grant was referred to only as 'the land of promise'. Inhabiting that property would take many years. Abraham's descendants would have to fight to take possession of their inheritance, which was the land of distant relatives, the Canaanites. But God was with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and promised to bless those who blessed them and curse those who cursed them. They had the LORD God Almighty on their side; with them all the way. But the journey proved to be hard-fought and bitter-sweet. Many of the people were destroyed because of their disbelief, or because of their disobedience.
