Les échanges entre Chine et Occident ne constituent pas un nouveau phénomène de notre ère : ils existaient déjà à l'époque des Han (206 av. J.-C. - 220 apr. J.-C.) lorsque les empereurs romains commencèrent à s'intéresser à la soie précieuse de l'Empire du Milieu. Cependant, les échanges n'ont jamais eu autant d'ampleur que de nos jours. Ils ont des effets importants aussi bien sur l'économie et la politique que sur l'art, la philosophie et la littérature. Depuis l'ouverture de la Chine dans les années 1980, c'est d'abord la France qui est devenue un pays d'accueil pour des milliers d'intellectuels et des étudiants chinois considérés comme des 'dissidents' dans leur pays, ce qui a rendu possible un nouvel échange d'idées sous une forme beaucoup plus directe. La thèse aborde le sujet de l'interculturalité d'intellectuels chinois installés en France dans le contexte littéraire du roman franco-chinois, traitant ainsi d'un domaine fondamental des relations interculturelles : par la publication de leurs oeuvres, les romanciers chinois initient un vaste échange culturel avec leurs lecteurs et lient leur monde d'idées à la culture française. Cinq écrivains exemplaires dont les oeuvres sont particulièrement pertinentes dans une thématique interculturelle constituent la base textuelle du projet : François Cheng, Gao Xingjian, Dai Sijie, Ya Ding et Shan Sa. Ils exercent leur culture sous l'influence de trois phénomènes contextuels majeurs : le souvenir commun de la Chine, la recherche d'une interculturalité littéraire et la constitution d'une nouvelle identité chinoise.

Essai Scientifique de l’année 2011 dans le domaine Lettres - Littérature comparée, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris III (Centre d'études et de recherches comparatistes), cours: Colloque sur l'interculturel (Angers 2011), langue: Français, résumé: En quoi une œuvre littéraire peut-elle être un portail d’entrée dans la culture de l’Autre? Quel peut être l’enrichissement des pratiques artistiques à la compréhension interculturelle? Dans cet article, il s’agira de nous plonger dans le monde romanesque de François Cheng. Nous allons voir comment l’auteur francophone d’origine chinoise crée un rapprochement entre sa vision du monde formée par les grandes traditions chinoises et sa façon de s’ouvrir sur l’Autre à l’aide de son amour pour la langue française. La contribution est ancrée dans le cadre théorique de ma thèse intitulée La Chine et l’Occident. Rencontre interculturelle dans le roman franco-chinois. Celle-ci consiste en trois étapes méthodologiques visant la (re)construction du système interculturel en tant que force fondatrice du genre. La première étape envisage le roman franco-chinois comme élément d’un système interculturel déjà existant, c'est-à-dire comme mode d’expression faisant partie de la mémoire des auteurs. Lors de la deuxième étape, il s’agit de saisir la manière dont la rencontre interculturelle franco-chinoise prend forme. Quels sont les niveaux de la rencontre interculturelle chez les auteurs pris comme exemples et dans quelles traditions s’inscrivent-ils? La réalisation de la troisième étape est basée sur les étapes précédentes. Sa question-clé est celle d’une identité franco-chinoise liée au genre du roman. L’analyse des pratiques artistiques de François Cheng en tant que romancier représente un extrait de la deuxième étape car elle a pour but de tenir compte de sa création d’un mode interculturel entre l’éloignement de son pays d’origine et ses liens actuels avec le monde culturel occidental. En conclusion, je montre que l’auteur a rédigé ses romans comme offre d’apprentissage et de découverte sur sa propre culture d’origine.

This book examines the works of four contemporary first-generation Chinese migrant writer-artists in France: François CHENG, GAO Xingjian, DAI Sijie, and SHAN Sa. They were all born in China, moved to France in their adulthood to pursue their literary and artistic ambitions, and have enjoyed the highest French and Western institutional recognitions, from the Grand Prix de la Francophonie to the Nobel Prize in Literature. They have established themselves not only as writers, but also as translators, calligraphers, painters, playwrights, and filmmakers mainly in their host country. French has become their dominant—but not only—language of literary creation (except for Gao); yet, linguistic idioms, poetic imagery, and classical thought from Chinese cultural heritage permeate their French texts and visual artworks, reflecting a strong translingual and transmedial sensibility. The book provides not only distinctive literary and artistic examples beyond existing studies of intercultural encounter, French postcolonial, and Chinese diasporic enquiries; more importantly, it formulates a theoretical model that captures the creative dynamics between the French/francophone and Chinese/sinophone spaces of articulation, thereby contributing to contemporary debates about literary and artistic production, interpretation, and circulation in the global development of comparative/world literature, as well as intermediality studies.

Originally published in 1981. The meaning and objectives of literature, argues David Bleich, are created by the reader, who depends on community consensus to validate his or her judgements. Bleich proposes that the study of English be consciously reoriented from a knowledge-finding to a knowledge-making enterprise. This involves a new explanation of language acquisition in childhood, a psychologically disciplined concept of linguistic and literary response, and a recognition of the intellectual authority of pedagogical communities to originate and establish knowledge. Amplifying his theoretical model with subjective responses drawn from his own classroom experience, Bleich suggests ways in which the study of language and literature can become more fully integrated with each person's responsibility for what he or she knows.
