Urban Renewal and Resistance: Race, Space, and the City in the Late Twentieth to Early Twenty-First Century examines how urban spaces are rhetorically constructed through discourses that variously justify or resist processes of urban growth and renewal. This book combines insights from critical geography, urban studies, and communication to explore how urban spaces, like Detroit and Harlem, are rhetorically structured through neoliberal discourses that mask the racialized nature of housing and health in American cities. The analysis focuses on city planning documents, web sites, media accounts, and draws on insights from personal interviews in order to pull together a story of city growth and its consequences, while keeping an eye on the ways city residents continue to confront and resist control over their communities through counter-narratives that challenge geographies of injustice. Recommended for scholars of communication studies, journalism, sociology, geography, and political science.

This book brings together the voices of people from five continents who live, work and research on the front lines of climate resistance and renewal. The many contributors to this volume explore the impacts of extreme weather events in Africa, the Caribbean and on Pacific islands, experiences of life-long defenders of the land and forests in Brazil, India, Indonesia and eastern Canada, and efforts to halt the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure from North America to South Africa. They offer various perspectives on how a just transition toward a fossil-free economy can take shape, as they share efforts to protect water resources, better feed their communities and implement new approaches to urban policy and energy democracy. Climate Justice and Community Renewal uniquely highlights the accounts of people who are directly engaged in local climate struggles and community renewal efforts, including on-the-ground land defenders, community organizers, leaders of international campaigns, agroecologists, activist-scholars and many others. It will appeal to students, researchers, activists, and all who appreciate the need for a truly justice-centered response to escalating climate disruptions.

Writing is the most effective way of dialoguing with the human family across boundaries of space and time. These essays are efforts to enter the dialogue. This is my third collection of essays. Reform and Renewal and Hope is a Dialogue preceded this publication. I have taken the liberty, in this book, to reprint in the "Milestones" section, the five essays which many consider the most successful of my writing career. As in those previous books, the essays enter the field of controversy much more readily than the other two dozen books I have written. The longer volumes tend to be contemplative rather than conversational. In any case, writing is a record of how some of us lived and thought. It becomes often a search for a truth we sometimes miss and occasionally encounter. I offer these essays conscious that they are, at best, a partial picture of a larger truth we do not see readily in its comprehensiveness. Writing is not so much a celebration of what it is like to arrive but a report from somewhere on the journey that we are at least on the road. It is an act of hope that the path is right and the direction correct. It is an act of confidence that one's energy will hold out and that in the moments of exhaustion others will bring the message home and correct its ill-formed syllables.

Dangerous Supplements written by Peter Fitzpatrick and has been published by Post-Contemporary Intervention this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Jurisprudence categories.

In Dangerous Supplements expert legal scholars employing a variety of theoretical perspectives--feminism, poststructuralism, semiotics, and Marxism--challenge predominating views in jurisprudence. Prevailing notions of the nature of the law, they argue, have failed to recognize the law's dependence on social constructs and the indeterminance of language. The contributors further claim that proponents of traditional notions have borrowed knowledge from other fields, only to reject that knowledge as ultimately subversive and dangerous in its ramifications. Taking as a point of departure H. L. A. Hart's The Concept of the Law, Peter Fitzgerald shows how Hart adopted Wittgenstein's linguistic theory to overthrow J. L. Austin's "simple" conception of rules and habits in law, only to jettison this theory in order to locate the essence of law in its evolution from a "primal scene." Other chapters examine the way in which the setting of English law above social relations has masked an imperial mission; how the philosophies of Hayek and Marx, as well as the discourses of liberalism, feminism, semiotics, and poststructuralism, have been assiduously marginalized and rendered inessential to jurisprudence.
