Este libro ofrece la oportunidad de mirar hacia el pasado, hacia la historia del Instituto de la Opinión Pública, institución pionera en España que se convertiría más tarde en el Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas. María Pilar Alcobendas, su autora, ha recopilado con esmero toda la información desde los inicios del I.O.P. en 1963, hasta la época de la transición española (1977), con la dedicación y la motivación de ser una de las sociólogas que formó parte de la institución desde sus principios. El libro se estructura en dos partes. En la primera, se abordan los principales retos y logros de la enseñanza de la Sociología y de la investigación en España durante el período 1943-63, porque, según la autora, el I.O.P. surge como consecuencia del esfuerzo educativo anterior. En la segunda, se detalla la actividad desarrollada en el Instituto por sus nueve directores, en sus cuatro sedes y manteniendo siempre a un grupo de técnicos que garantizaron la actividad investigadora. La finalidad del entonces Instituto de la Opinión Pública tiene su continuidad en el Centro de Investigaciones Sociológica: investigar los estados de la opinión pública española mediante el empleo de las más avanzadas técnicas de investigación social que garanticen la objetividad de sus resultados, así como detectar las actitudes y motivaciones de los españoles ante los hechos y situaciones que se producen. El primer Director del I.O.P., el catedrático de sociología Luis González Seara, ha escrito el prólogo de esta historia, en la que se sintetiza el desarrollo de la enseñanza y el establecimiento de la Sociología en España. Este libro nos permite conocer y reconocer lo que significó el Instituto de la Opinión Pública y el lugar que ocupa en la historia de la sociología española contemporánea.
